Vernon Vipers’ twins Kellen (1G) and Connor (2A) Jones combined for three points as Canada West doubled Sweden 6-3 in World Junior A Challenge play Tuesday afternoon at Credit Union Place in Summerside, P.E.I.

The twins’ linemate, Cody Kunyk of the Sherwood Park Crusaders, earned first star with a goal and an assist.

Defenceman Curtis Gedig (Cowichan Valley Capitals) fired the winner in the final minute of the second period, assisted by Daniel Carr (St. Albert Steel) and Joey Laleggia (Penticton Vees).

Sean Bonar (Vees) recorded 33 saves for the win.

Canada West ended preliminary play at 1-1. Playoffs begin Thursday.

On Sunday, netminder Sergey Kostenko stopped 32 shots as Russia clipped Canada West 2-1.

The Russians (2-0) scored first when Russia’s Ivan Krasnov pounced on a bad bounce in front of Bonar.

Canada West continued to apply the pressure in the middle frame, but went two goals down after Sergey Barbashev picked the top corner over the glove of Bonar, 5:42 into the period.

The Canadians got on the board while shorthanded late in the second period. Kostenko came out to play the puck, only to see it end up on the stick of Clarke Breitkreuz (SJHL Yorkton Terriers), who wrapped the puck into the empty net.

n The Vees leapfrogged the Vipers into the B.C. Hockey League penthouse by grounding the Merritt Centennials 4-1 Saturday night at the South Okanagan Events Centre.

Penticton (17-2-0-1) got singles from Ryan Viselli, Logan Johnston, Garrett Milan and Eric Filiou before Alex Valenti answered for the 6-13-0-1 Cents late in the third period.

The Vipers (17-1) had two games in hand on Penticton heading into Tuesday night’s contest against the Salmon Arm SilverBacks (12-7-1-1) at the Sunwave Centre. They head north for a three-game swing against the Prince George Spruce Kings (7-11-1-1), Quesnel Millionaires (5-12-0-3) and Williams Lake Timberwolves (5-11-1-0), starting Friday night at the PG Coliseum.
