Vipers gear up for spring camp
By Graeme Corbett - Vernon Morning Star
Vernon Vipers’ assistant coach Jason Williamson is a tired man these days. He might be working harder now than when he captained the team in 2001-02.
Not only is he helping guide the Snakes towards the Royal Bank Cup, he’s also got the small matter of the Vipers’ spring camp to coordinate. The first session starts today (1 p.m.) at Civic Arena, and ends just two hours before Vernon hosts the Alberta Junior Hockey League champion Grande Prairie Storm in Game 1 of the Doyle Cup regional championship.
“I feel like I’m going to die,” chuckled a weary-sounding Williamson, now in his second season as an assistant. “But we’ve got some definite prospects coming from all over, even from Ontario, Colorado and Washington.”
Williamson, 28, expects around 100 skaters and a dozen goalies will attend the open camp, which will likely run from around 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday.
“Obviously, our name is getting out there, and there are some players we haven’t seen, so there could be some diamonds in the rough,” added Williamson.
In terms of actual commitments for the 2009-10 season, the Vipers aren’t quite ready to tip their hand, but Williamson hinted their scouts have dug up some top-quality prospects.
“We’ve got a lot of high-end recruits, we just haven’t announced anything yet.”
Meanwhile, a pair of Vipers have made the final cut for the Central Scouting list of the top 210 North American skaters available for the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.
Rookie forward Cory Kane leapt 45 spots to wind up 117th, while previously unranked defenceman Kyle Bigos landed at 169th.
Kane (6-foot-3, 190 pounds) has 4-8-12 and in 17 post-season games, while Bigos (6-foot-5, 230 pounds) leads the Vipers’ defence with 2-4-6 and 37 penalty minutes in 17 games.
Bigos, an Upland, Calif. product, has committed to play with the Division 1 NCAA Merrimack Warriors of North Andover, Mass. for the 2010-11 season. Kane is also a California native.
Penticton Vees’ forward Curtis McKenzie was rated 89th by Central Scouting. The draft goes June 29 in Montreal.
