Jones boys clutch for Vipers in overtime win

It took Kellen Jones four minutes to start the scoring, and only 10 seconds to finish it as the Vernon Vipers dumped the host Penticton Vees 4-3 in double overtime Saturday night.
Right off the OT faceoff, Kellen’s twin brother, Connor, stripped a Penticton defender and rushed in on netminder Jordan White, only to be hauled down.
With referee Korey Martens’ arm raised to award a penalty, Kellen (fourth and fifth goals) went forehand-backhand on White to give the Vipers (19-7-1-2) the win, stunning 2,067 B.C. Hockey League fans at the South Okanagan Events Centre.
“They (Jones boys) were very good against Penticton,” said Vipers head coach Mark Ferner. “They would feel the pressure (battling in the corner) and spin off. They were hard to contain.
“Our start was important, and we had a good first period. We were getting pucks deep, and we were winning the races and battles.”
To open the scoring, Vipers’ netminder Andrew Hammond caught the Vees on a line change, firing the puck up to Connor, who made a cross-ice pass to Kellen, who out waited White before going top shelf.
The Vees (16-8-0-4) replied as Colton Jobke (second) took advantage of a Vernon neutral zone turnover.
Ryan Viselli (seventh) gave Penticton the lead – despite being outshot 16-8 – with a powerplay point through traffic.
“We lost too many draws cleanly to their guys and they were getting opportunities off that,” said Ferner. “In their end, they also did a pretty good job of getting in our shooting lanes. It’s something we’ll have to look at.”
Cory Kane (12th) and Mike Collins (ninth) scored 38 seconds apart midway through the second frame put Vernon in front.
Kane, with a strong forecheck from John Digness and Ryan Santana, wheeled out from the corner to rip a high shot past White, whose 37 saves earned him third star. Collins converted a rebound off Chris Crowell’s shot from just inside the blueline.
Erik Slemp (second) rounded out the regulation scoring on the powerplay at 16:24 in the second.
Penticton poured on the pressure in the third stanza, outshooting Vernon 15-6, but Hammond (33 saves) stood tall.
The Snakes entertain the Cowichan Valley Capitals (13-12-0-2) Friday night at Wesbild Centre before returning for a Saturday rematch with the Vees in Penticton.
