2+ weeks since the Cooke signing and still crickets from the Vipers. You would think with a new hockey guy at the helm that he would realize the importance of keeping his fans in the loop. Loyal fans need to be fed snippets of info year round to keep them engaged. Are we not listening for news from our favorite NHL teams? I really was expecting a better effort and more respect for the paying customers. If Cooke is busy on the road scouting & recruiting he should still be communicating with Todd Miller back at Viper Head Office.
The path to success in junior hockey is recruitment. Every week or so we read on Diehard's site about players committing to teams in the BCHL. Take a look at the player's stats and where they played and you'll notice that most of these guys are the top prospects on their teams. The Vipers late decision on a new GM/coach will come back to bite them when the season starts and the losses start to pile up. Expect an influx of late cuts of 20 year olds from the WHL to form the foundation of our team. This is what you get when you're late recruiting.
I'm guessing the Vipers haven't signed anyone or have players committed for the 2025-26 season due to the fact they have yet to announce any player signings. If that's the case, they are in big trouble if they think they will now begin to recruit/sign players for the season that starts in a month. What elite or top prospects are left or even available at this time of the year? Any elite, top prospect or good hockey player was recruited last fall and signed with a team many many months ago. I'm guessing the only kids that are left hanging around are because they weren't good enough to make Junior A and that's why they haven't been signed or recruited by now. Matt Cooke and the Vipers have a ton of work to do with a month to go before the teams first game. Maybe the Vipers have recruited and signed players for this coming season and have yet said anything. If that's the case, that's a poor way to treat your dedicated and loyal fans that support you. Love them or hate them, I think the Vipers and a lot of other teams could learn a lot from how the Penticton Vees run their organization on the ice and off the ice. The Vees marketing and social media crew is by far the best!
Apparently the coaching staff is a one man gang. Cooke is the only one listed. One man is the entire coaching staff and GM! That’s a lot of work for a real staff let alone one guy. No wonder things are not progressing.
I would assume the Vipers have the same scouts from last season, they also named former assistant coach Dean McAmmond director of player development and mentorship, and hired team consultant Mike Sillinger and consultant Barry Chyzowski. Matt Cooke said the day he was hired, he was going to hire two new assistant coaches.
The Vees social media group also has paid positions. Unfair comparison, respectfully
Love him or hate him Cooke brings loads of NHL experience into the picture. Every Viper fan I've talked to is looking forward to the season. Let’s see what Cookie can do. I 'm not expecting great things to start because he is so far behind in recuiting. But let’s see what he can come up with. And more importantly does the play improve as the season goes along. I'm really looking forward to the season
Paid or not paid it doesn’t take much for someone to update the website and keep fans updated through out the summer. Other then posting the schedule and hiring of a new coach the Vipers haven’t said anything since the end of last season. Every couple of weeks something as simple as who is retuning from last year? Have the Vipers recruited or signed anyone for this season? How about mentioning the two trades they made back in June? What about posting dates and a schedule for training camp? Something, anything…. It’s better then nothing.
You can't seriously expect anything from this organization. They FINALLY took Lomicky off as the the coach on their website...
Matt Cooke vision is an effective playing force on the ice with speed and a strong defensive. I hope his vision will be realistic.
