Chiefs Acquire Goalie James Porter from Moose Jaw

January 3, 2020

Spokane, Wash. — The Spokane Chiefs announced on Friday that they have acquired goaltender James Porter Jr. from the Moose Jaw Warriors. In exchange, the Chiefs send Moose Jaw an eighth-round pick in the 2021 WHL Bantam Draft.

“With the injury sustained by Campbell Arnold, we had a need at the goalie position,” said Chiefs’ general manager Scott Carter. “James has extensive experience in the WHL and we’re very familiar with him from his time in Kelowna. We’re excited to welcome him to the organization.”

Porter, a 2000-born goalie from Bonners Ferry, Idaho, spent the start of the 2019-20 season with the Vernon Vipers of the BCHL, posting a 2.59 GAA and .922 SV% in 9 games, highlighted by a 42-save shutout versus Penticton on Dec. 13.

A former seventh-round pick in the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft by Kelowna, Porter played two full seasons with the Rockets from 2017-19, recording four shutouts in 73 appearances with a 3.29 GAA and .897 SV%. He set career marks in 2017-18 with 22 wins and 2,291 minutes played, earning three shutouts. He was acquired by Moose Jaw from Kelowna in a November 2019 trade.

Porter is expected to join the team immediately. His availability for Friday night’s game versus Portland is to be determined.

The Chiefs return to action on Friday, January 3 when they host the Portland Winterhawks at Spokane Arena. It will be Fred Meyer Calendar Giveaway, with the first 3,000 fans through the gates receiving a Spokane Chiefs wall calendar courtesy of Fred Meyer.

Tickets for Friday night and all Chiefs home games are available online and via the Chiefs’ Ticket Office, over the phone at 509-535-PUCK or in-person at Spokane Arena.

Porter got his wish and was never going to stay here once he was traded out of Kelowna..unfortunately the Vipers now have an even bigger problem in finding another goaltender to split time with Herbst.

Porter Jr got to Spokane and is the backup goaltender for tonight's game vs the Portland Winterhawks.

And it just gets a lot more difficult for the Vipers. Now they must use one of their two remaining cards to find a goaltending partner for Herbst. That will leave only one card if they wish to make a change to their lineup for the remainder of the season. This team is clearly not good enough to play 60 minutes against the better teams in the BCHL. It is deplorable that McKee & Glen have waited so long to make any changes and now it is basically too late. It will be surprising if the Vipers get past the first round come playoff time. I hope McKee & Glen have learned a valuable lesson of bringing in WHL players. WHL players who are younger than 20 are merely “rentals” and can leave at the most inopportune time. Not to worry, I’m sure Jack will go on a scoring spree soon.

Well this is a huge loss for the Vipers. I thought the Vipers may have had the best goaltending duo in the league. Before James Porter Jr joined the Vipers, the Snakes had troubles finding a backup goaltender. After Max Palaga went down with a season ending injury in early October, the Vipers went through several "AP" goaltenders before acquiring James Porter Jr. Not only is this a big loss for Vernon but at the worst time of year. With the trade deadline on January 10th the Vipers have two cards remaining to make some roster moves, one will now be used to replace Porter Jr. I was hoping the Snakes could have used both cards to try and acquire some kind of forward/scoring before the deadline. I really liked Porter Jr. The kid played very well in almost every game he played in, but due to a lack of scoring, he played in more losses then wins. I actually felt sorry for the kid, on some nights he was very good but the team only managed a goal or two and would lose. Today's trade is a good example and the main reason why I'm not a huge fan of bringing in kids from the Western Hockey League. Last year the Vipers lost several players who left the Western Hockey League for Vernon only to return to the WHL later on during the season. Duncan Wray brought in kids from the Western League but not very often after the same kind of situation happened. It's a gamble if you ask me. If a kid who doesn't fit on a good team in the dub, comes to Vernon and plays well, another team from the WHL will take notice, and make the trade with his previous WHL team and, the kids gone back to the Western League. I have been saying this for some time now and will say it again. I thought the team needed a bit of a shakeup back in November. I thought the Vipers needed to make a trade or two before the December 1st card deadline, Instead they didn't do anything. The team has struggled offensively from day 1, been inconsistent most of the season and struggled defensively in there own end but other then a few roster moves, have done nothing really major to shake up the team or bring in some kind of offensive help. If you look around the league, most of all the other teams have been tweaking rosters or making trades. Something happened in Merritt December 8th after almost blowing a 7-2 3rd period lead and the team has struggled since. Now with one week until the trade deadline, and needing to find another goaltender your cards are limited. I'm disappointed in the recruiting this year and the past few seasons to be honest. The Vipers recruiting hasn't been very strong the past four or five years. It's been a while since the Vipers have had an elite player or two. It will be interesting to see what happens before January 10th.

Perhaps the new ownership has to look at who is doing the scouting for them and make a trade???? smiley? On a brighter note, we had a nothing team last year. But the coaches turned it around. I remember standing there talking to my hockey experts and we all said , guess what this team will never make it past the first round let alone get past salmon arm who had our number all year. But then things changed a nothing special team became believers in themselves something that our coach Jason has been trying to instill in our team from day one. Much like mark ferner would say start believing in yourselfs as hockey players and believe in the process and good things will happen. Guess what hockey experts we became proud owners of the interior division championship. Anything can happen if you believe.

Bingo you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear! McKee is a really bad coach, but It wouldn't matter who was the coach they are just a bad hockey team with no talent! You obviously don't read the other posts! Last January the team was healthy for the first time all year and the suspended players were back! That's why they made the run. Plus the top teams were all knocked the first round. It is about time to stop making excuses for McKee!!
