Vipers Acquire Scott from Grande Prairie

September 3, 2019

Vernon, BC:  The Vernon Vipers have acquired defenceman Doug Scott from the Grande Prairie Storm in exchange for Ryan MacLean.

Scott is a veteran of 111 BCHL games with Coquitlam and most recently the Cowichan Valley Capitals.  The 19 year old North Vancouver product had 4 goals and 8 assists last season.

“Doug is a steady defender that competes extremely hard every shift,” says Head Coach and GM of the Vipers Jason McKee.  “He’s a veteran entering his 3rd season and we believe there’s an offensive upside to his game.”

The Vipers would like to welcome Doug to Vernon and wish Ryan all the best with the Storm.

I was a little surprised by this trade. Ryan MacLean was one of the Vipers recruits/committed players. It's not too often you see a recruited/committed player traded before the regular season even starts. I think the Vipers traded/or released a recruit/committed player a few years ago, but I don't recall the Vipers trading too many committed players before the regular season started.

MacLean & Scott were basically the same size, the only difference going by there stat's/profiles is that MacLean was a year younger and is coming out of West Vancouver Academy Prep school, where as Scott is a year older and has junior hockey experience, playing the past two seasons in Coquitlam & Cowichan. The Grande Prairie Storm recently acquired Scott from the Cowichan Capitals August 16th 2019.

Adding Scott adds some junior hockey experience and leadership to the Vipers blueline and dressing room. Scott's familiar with league.

The Vipers still have a 24 man roster. The league has a maximum limit of 23 players per team. Who will be the Vipers final cut? Are the Vipers finished making trades before the start of the regular season?
