There Is A High Probability Vipers Alumni Coughlin Wont Make The NHL:

Puck77.com has doubts on Chicago Blackhawks prospect and former Vernon Vipers forward Liam Coughlin on making the NHL.

Coughlin finished his fourth season at the University of Vermont this year. In 29 games this season Coughlin collected (6-goals-11-assists-17-points).

Coughlin played two seasons in Vernon (2013-2015) playing in 107 games with the Vipers collected (38-goals-67-assists-105-points). Coughlin was drafted 130th overall by the Oilers in Round 5 at the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. The Oilers traded Coughlin to the Chicago Blackhawks on July 6th 2015 for Anders Nilsson.

Chicago Blackhawks: Prospect Profile, Liam Coughlin

WallMaz  May 1, 2019

Chicago Blackhawks prospect Liam Coughlin is a bit of a question mark. There is a high probability he will not make it to the NHL.

Liam Coughlin is an American center. He just finished up his senior year at University of Vermont in the NCAA. Coughlin put up six goals and 11 assists in 29 games.

Coughlin was acquired in a trade with the Edmonton Oilers. Liam Coughlin was sent to the Chicago Blackhawks for goaltender Anders Nilsson. Liam Coughlin was originally selected in the fifth round, 130th overall, in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.

He had spent the years previous playing in the NCAA putting up a combined 12 goals and 27 assists in 100 games.

Coughlin’s PNHLe

His PNHLe shows that Coughlin has little NHL offensive potential. He may have defensive potential but he is currently ranked 250th at forward in terms of PNHLe.

Film On Coughlin

It was hard to find film on Liam Coughlin, so this clip is not the best. As you can see in this clip he plays with a lot of strength and has a decent shot.

In this next clip you can see he plays a great defensive game. He’s able to transition smoothly from defense to offense and able to score.

Final Thoughts On Liam Coughlin

Liam Coughlin is currently not under contract and his eligibility for an ELC deal with the Blackhawks runs out on July first.

Liam Coughlin plays with a lot of power. He has great size at 6’2″ and 201 pounds. He is a very physical player and has a good two-way game. His offense leaves a lot to be desired. While he does have some offensive skill, he is still very raw. The Blackhawks have invited to prospect camp many times and has impressed them a lot, but at 24 he is considered a long shot and needs time to develop.

I see Coughlin an AHL player. He may eventually get a bottom line job in the NHL and could be a decent penalty killer. He also has size which many Chicago Blackhawks prospects do not have, so he has the advantage there.

Liam Coughlin is already 24 years old. He has shown great physical play, but is very raw. He needs to develop quickly in order to get a contract with the Chicago Blackhawks.
