MacDonald Commits To Vipers:

Cameron MacDonald – Speed and Smarts

June 3, 2019

Vernon, BC:  Cameron MacDonald is bringing his scoring touch to the Vipers for the 2019-20 season. The 5’10” speedster from Surrey committed to Vernon after the April spring camp.

In 61 games over two years at Abbotsford’s Yale Hockey Academy, Cameron has produced 51 goals and 47 assists. In between those two years he played a year of major midget hockey with the Valley West Hawks, where he notched 27 goals and 19 assists in 34 games.

He says that a lot of his goals come from “going hard to the opposition net, looking for deflections and rebounds.” He attributes that approach partly to Yale Academy coach Mark Holick, the former Viper bench boss. He also says that “Coach Holick has urged me to use my speed to beat defenders wide and create scoring chances.”

That speed and the scoring touch were certainly on display during the Viper spring camp where he caught the attention of Viper scouts and fans alike.

A strong student from a family that values education, he has chosen the prep school route and the Vipers because, he says, “that combination of experiences improves your chances of getting an NCAA scholarship to a good university with a good hockey program.” As a long term goal after hockey, he has his sights set on a career as an independent business owner.

It looks like the Vipers are bringing in a kid that can put up some good numbers. This past season MacDonald had (35-goals-25-assists-60-points) in 32 games with Yale Academy Prep. MacDonald also played in three games as an "AP" affiliated player with the defending Royal Bank Cup Champion Chilliwack Chiefs and four games with the Powell River Kings the previous season. At only 17 yrs old has some time to grow, mature and develop into a solid junior hockey player. Welcome to Vernon Cameron and all the best this coming hockey season.

I'm glad the Vipers are making some off season announcements early into the summer. The past several years, the Vipers were the only team in the league that never made any announcements regarding new players/new recruits over the summer. The Vipers website and social media pages almost were silent over the summer months. Lets hope the Vipers marketing staff and office keep the fans in the loop this summer and not sitting in the dark until training camp.
