Viper Penalties Lead to Loss in Surrey
Saturday, October 20, 2012 - Submitted by Don Klepp
The Surrey Eagles used a potent power play to erase a 3-1 Viper lead and close with a 5-3 win at home on Friday.
New acquired Brady Shaw surprised Viper goalie Danny Todosychuk with a backhand from a sharp angle at 1:46 of the third period to tie the game at 3-3.
With 15 seconds remaining in the second period, Shaw was credited with a goal that sneaked through Todosychuk’s pads and gave the Eagles new life. Both of Shaw’s goals came on the power play, which has been anemic of late but seemed rejuvenated b y the addition of a player who notched 15 power play scores for the Coquitlam Express last season.
Craig Wyszomirski got the winner at 4.31 of the third on yet another power play. The Eagles finished the game three for seven with the man advantage.
Demico Hannoun added an empty netter with 28 seconds remaining in the contest.
The final score represented a dramatic turnaround after the Vipers had absolutely dominated the first period and outplayed their hosts for much of the second period as well. In the opening period, the Vipers did not allow an Eagle scoring chance while out shooting the Eagles 15-3.
TJ Dumonceaux opened the scoring at 2:28, rifling a high shot past Michael Santaguida after taking a banked pass from Jedd Soleway and speeding down the right wing. Brett Corkey then doubled the lead at 6:54 when his power play wrister from the point was slightly deflected on its path to the Surrey goal.
Colton Mackie, who continually tried to disrupt the Vipers’ focus in the contest, dispossessed Adam Tambellini and strode unmolested to beat Todosychuk at 3:49 of the second period.
However, the Vipers restored their two-goal lead 35 seconds later on Landon Robin’s first BCHL goal. Robin banged in his second rebound after Craig Martin had made a forceful rush on the left wing and had shot low at Santaguida’s left pad.
Danny Todosychuk’s return to the Vipers was eventful as he made several brilliant saves in the first 10 minutes of the third period when Surrey dominated. Most of Surrey’s scoring chances came on the power play.
Vernon lost two forwards in the game. In the first period, Colton Sparrow was ejected for a check from behind. Then early in the second period Brendan Persley had to crawl off as a result of blocking a shot with his right ankle and subsequently twisting it severely.
Persley was taken to hospital where he received the diagnosis of a high ankle sprain. His left ankle was also X-rayed, which revealed a fracture. Persley had played the first period and a substantial portion of Wednesday’s game versus Merritt with a broken ankle. He is expected to miss 4-6 weeks of action.
