Interior up for grabs
The B.C. Hockey League’s Interior Conference final could be the hottest matchup since Brad Pitt hooked up with Angelina Jolie. The two rivals have had countless classic battles over the last eight years, but never in a Conference final.
As the top Interior seed, the Snakes will host the Gorillas for Games 1 and 2 of the best-of-seven series Friday and Saturday night respectively at Wesbild Centre.
After stumbling in Game 1 of their best-of-seven semifinal, the Vipers went four straight to rout the Penticton Vees 4-1 to advance. They showed tremendous depth, with contributions from all four lines, while Andrew Hammond exuded Zen-like calmness between the pipes.
Salmon Arm iced the Westside Warriors 4-1, ending with a thrilling 5-4 OT victory Friday night at Sunwave Centre.
Bobby Lipsett, at 3:28 of the extra stanza, played the hero.
Said SilverBacks’ head coach Rylan Ferster, of the Vipers: “They’re certainly a very good team, they’re very structured, they’re very defensive. We’re going to have to match their work ethic and try to get some pucks down low and some pucks at the net.”
Conor Morrison was the ‘Backs leading sniper with 5-6-11, while Interior Conference MVP Mark Zengerle missed the final three games after taking an elbow from the Warriors’ Brad Plumpton.
Meanwhile, the Cowichan Valley Capitals pulled off two straight wins to force a Game 7 in their Coastal Conference semifinal with the Victoria Grizzlies.
After stuffing the Grizz 4-1 Friday night at Bear Mountain Arena, the Caps got a 43-save performance from first star Chris Rawlings in a 3-1 Game 6 win Saturday at the Big Stick in Duncan.
Rawlings has stopped 95 of 97 shots in his last two games.
Chris Zaires, Nick Anderson and Anthony Perdicaro handled the Cowichan attack, while Derek Lee replied for the Grizz.
Game 7 went Tuesday night in Victoria, with the winner facing the Power River Kings in Game 1 of the Coastal final Friday night.
n The Vipers’ Cory Kane earned B.C. Hockey League Player-of-the Week honours.
The Irvine, Calif. product pocketed four goals and three assists in a trio of Interior Conference semifinal wins over the Penticton Vees last week, including a three-point effort in Vernon's series-clinching 7-1 win Friday at Wesbild Centre.
The 18-year old also put in a 2+1 effort in Game 4 and scored the late game winner in Game 3.
