by Kelowna Rockets Staff
Kelowna Rockets general manager Bruce Hamilton announced today that the Rockets have acquired 20-year-old centre Jadon Joseph from the Moose Jaw Warriors in exchange for forward Kyle Crosbie, overage forward Kobe Mohr, goaltender James Porter and the Rockets third-round pick in the 2022 WHL Bantam Draft.
“We needed to get a right shot centreman that can consistently win faceoffs,” said Hamilton. “Kobe was a big part of this deal, they really wanted him back in the trade. James wanted to get back into the league, and Crosbie wanted a chance to play more minutes.”
Joseph has appeared in 21 games for the Warriors this season, posting 13 points (7G, 6A) and 21 penalty minutes. The Sherwood Park, Alta. product has suited up in 209 WHL regular-season games over four seasons, collecting 113 points (41G, 72A) and 120 penalty minutes.
The 6’1, 172-pound forward was drafted by the Lethbridge Hurricanes during the 5th round (No. 98) at the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft. Joseph has also played with Vancouver and Regina.
Crosbie, 18, was originally drafted by the Rockets in the eighth round (No. 174) of the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft. He appeared in 77 games for the Rockets, collecting 14 points (8G, 6A) and 12 penalty minutes.
Mohr was added to the Rockets roster earlier this month, he had four points (1G, 3A) in nine games with Kelowna.
Porter, 19, was selected by the Rockets during the seventh round (No. 153) at the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft. He was assigned to the Vernon Vipers of the BCHL earlier this month. He suited up in 73 games for Kelowna, collecting a record of 30-22-7-2 with 3.29 GAA and a .897 SAV%.

Warriors and Rockets complete Sunday trade
November 24, 2019
Moose Jaw Warriors General Manager Alan Millar has announced that the team has acquired 20-year-old forward Kobe Mohr, the rights to 19-year-old goalie James Porter, 18-year-old forward Kyle Crosbie, and a 3rd round pick in 2022 in exchange for 20-year-old forward Jadon Joseph.
“We are pleased to add Kobe, James, and Kyle to our hockey club. Kobe is a veteran player who brings leadership, experience, and a solid, complete game to our team. James is an experienced WHL goaltender who gives us good depth. Kyle is a young, skilled player who has good upside and should benefit from this new opportunity,” commented General Manager Alan Millar.
“This deal keeps our hockey club competitive this season while also benefiting our team in the future. The additions of Mohr and Crosbie gives us added depth up front and Porter adds good depth. The deal gives us important experience, a good young player, and an important future 3rd round draft pick,” added Millar. “We would like to thank Jadon for his time with our hockey club and wish him the best in his career ahead.”
Mohr (LW), 5’11”, 175lbs, is from Lloydminster, Alberta and has two goals and seven points through 15 games this season. Mohr was originally drafted by Edmonton in the 1st round of the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft, he’s gone on to play 257 games in the WHL and has 34 goals and 99 points.
Porter, 5’11”, 175lbs, is from Bonners Ferry, Idaho and in 30 games last season with the Rockets he posted a record of 8-13-3-1 with a 3.32gaa and an .899sv%. Porter is currently with the Vernon Vipers (BCHL) and in three games has a 2.38gaa and a .919sv%.
Crosbie (RC), 5’9”, 170lbs, is from Didsbury, Alberta. In 12 games this season with the Rockets he has one goal and three points. Last season in 63 games in Kelowna he had seven goals and 11 points. I knew this day was coming eventually when the Rockets first assigned Porter, Jr to the Vipers. Porter, Jr is a veteran goaltender and too good of a goaltender not to be back in the WHL. I knew another team from the Western Hockey League would be calling the Rockets on some kind of a deal in the near future once he was assigned to Vernon. Porter, Jr played very well in the loss to Langley last night, was the difference in the hockey game. I was actually thinking to myself, that if he keeps playing like this, it wont be long before a Western Hockey League team comes calling.
The Warriors have two goaltenders and now with the addition of Porter, Jr that makes three. 19 yr old Adam Evanoff (from Penticton) has played in eight games this season and is in his third season in Moose Jaw. 17 yr old Jackson Berry is in his first season with the Warriors, has only played in two games this season.
Porter, Jr is listed on the Warriors roster. I cant see Porter, Jr staying in Vernon and I'm sure will report to Moose Jaw. My guess is Berry will be reassigned to Junior A to make room for Porter, Jr.
With Max Palaga still injured and out of the Vipers lineup, this is a big blow for the Snakes who will be down to one goaltender again. Reilly Herbst will once again now have to carry the load until Vernon can bring in/acquire a new goaltender to replace Porter, Jr.
These are the chances/risks you take bringing in kids from the Western Hockey League. Losing Porter, Jr didn't cost the Snakes anything and the Vipers needed a second goaltender at the time Porter, Jr was available. It's just too bad the Vipers are losing a good kid and a solid goaltender. Vernon hasn't had much luck the past year with kids from the WHL.
With the BCHL card deadline next weekend, the Vipers will be in the looks for a new goaltender and hopefully on the hunt for some scoring. It will be interesting to see what the Vipers do before the card deadline.
With the carding deadline coming on Monday December 1, I would expect to see some activity this week, or on December 1. Teams have to reduce to a total of 25 players and unused cards on that date with a maximum of 23 players. With Brendan Kim back home, a trade involving him seems likely. And now with Porter's Major Junior rights being traded to Moose Jaw, he might leave also, a goalie is needed.
But the stats show us that goals are needed even more. The Vipers are now the lowest scoring team in the league and haven't scored more than 2 goals in their last 6 games. Some player movement is likely to happen this week or next Monday December 1 at the latest.
James Porter, Jr has been removed from the Moose Jaw Warriors roster. The Warriors are down to two goaltenders, Adam Evanoff and Jackson Berry.
Porter should have stayed with the vipers, at least he would be playing. Good move now he may have a season off , who knows
