AJHL To Implement Two-Referee System:

AJHL to Implement Two-Referee System

March 3rd, 2010 – The Alberta Junior Hockey League announced today that the two-referee system will be implemented throughout Round Two of the 2010 AJHL Enerflex Cup Playoffs. The two-referee system adds a fourth official for a total of two referees and two linesmen.

The two-referee system is used regularly in the National Hockey League (NHL), Canadian Hockey League (CHL) and at all levels of professional hockey. The Alberta Junior Hockey League has implemented the two-referee system in the post-season since 2006.

The two-referee system decreases the chance of high impact calls being missed and assists in the development of officials. The two referee system will utilize the knowledge of the more experienced referees and enable them to become actively involved in the development of young officials during the post season.

As hockey leagues across Alberta conclude the 2009-2010 season, a growing number of quality officials will become available to the AJHL and allow the League to increase use of the two-referee system.

A complete schedule for the 2010 AJHL Enerflex Cup Playoffs is available on the AJHL website http://www.ajhl.ca/.

Now will we see the BCHL take a look at the two referee system? Would you like to see the two referee system in the BCHL? What are your thoughts? Leave a comment below in the comment box.

as long as the NHL uses a two ref system then the BCHL should also...either that, or why not just allow the linsman to make more calls...this would delete the need for more people on the ice and would increase the on-ice authority from one too three people...

I don't understand why the BCJHL has waited THIS long to implement this system. It will drastically cut down on the chippiness behind the play and give more opportunity for special teams. As far as the other comment of linesman being allowed to make more calls, they can barely do the job they're already assigned. 3 refs is way too much. It would be a power struggle out on the ice, and the games would end up being decided by an over-zealous referee which happens too much already.
