That Vernon franchise record 22-game winning streak is safe for another year.
The Vernon Vipers lost 2-1 to the host Prince George Spruce Kings Friday night, ending their nine-game B.C. Hockey League victory run.
All-star goalie Kevin Genoe registered 41 saves and the Sprucies took advantage of two defensive miscues in front of 720 fans at the Coliseum.
“He (Genoe) was very good,” said Vipers head coach Mark Ferner. “We played good enough to win. We can’t complain about the effort, but we have to find ways to win those types of hockey games.”
Connor Jones from his brother Kellen accounted for the Vernon powerplay goal, late in the second period. It was Connor’s 10th goal of the season.
Sean Ambrosie, with his 17th, and Dan Correale, with his fourth, unassisted, handled the offence for the sixth-place Spruce Kings. Correale picked off a clearing pass by goalie Andrew Hammond, and found the empty net midway through the third period.
The Vipers, who rang five shots off posts, fell three points behind the Interior Conference leading Salmon Arm SilverBacks – 2-1 winners Friday night over the host Trail Smoke Eaters.
Vernon (24-8-1-2) faced the Quesnel Millionaires Saturday night at the Vault.
The Mills upset the visiting Penticton Vees 3-2 Friday night with Kiefer Smiley making 41 saves for first star.
SNAKE BITES: Prince George took four of seven minor penalties...Viper grad Hunter Bishop scored once as the Ohio State Buckeyes bounced the Bentley Falcons 10-1 in a non-Conference NCAA game Friday night in Waltham, Mass...Former Viper Kyle St. Denis, who has been on the Kelowna Rockets’ injury reserve list since Oct. 24 when he broke the scaphoid in his right wrist, had his cast removed Wednesday and was fitted for a splint. If all goes as planned, he could be back in the Rockets lineup by the first week of January.
