BCHL Grad Genoway named WCHA Scholar-Athlete

Monday, February 23, 2009 - Submitted by UND Athletics

University of North Dakota junior defenseman Chay Genoway (Vernon Vipers/BCHL) has been named a Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) Scholar-Athlete recipient, the conference office announced today.

This is the second time that genoway has been honoured for academic excellence while studying at North Dakota and suiting up for the Sioux.

To earn the recognition, student-athletes must have completed at least one year of residency at their present institution prior to the current academic year and must also have a grade-point average of at least 3.50 on a 4.0 scale for the previous two semesters.

Genoway, a native of Morden, Manitoba, is a management major and a 2007-08 member of the All-WCHA Academic Team. He is UND’s leading scorer this season with two goals and a career-high 26 assists for 28 points in 31 games.

"The WCHA Scholar-Athlete Award is among the most prestigious of all individual honors the Association presents each year and we are extremely proud of what these outstanding young men and women have accomplished – both on the ice and in the classroom," WCHA Conference Commissioner Bruce McLeod said. "They represent the very best in collegiate athletics."

The 2009 WCHA Scholar-Athletes are being recognized and honored on-ice with a commemorative plaque at home games during the remainder of the season. The winners will also be recognized in tournament programs and in future men’s and women’s conference yearbooks.
