Thank you VDHF for all the information on the BCHL decision to leave Hockey Canada. There are huge ramifications to this decision and unfortunately a lot of the fans are in the dark. Your continued commitment is greatly appreciated. Haha, there's that "commitment" word again. Keep up the great work, looking forward to talking in person again, have a good summer.
As the BCHL turns the pages to a new chapter in their history, we, as fans, need to support them 100%. We should not give the boo birds the time of day by posting negative articles from a source that has been against the BCHL.
Now, that the BCHL is an independent league, should they consider implementing a draft. This, over the years, would make the league a more competitive one. I’ve been against this in the past but, if the BCHL wants to change, the draft would be an awesome addition.
One article I read mentioned that the vote to independence was not unanimous so, which teams preferred the status quo.
One thing for certain is that the Vipers, or any BCHL team for that matter, can NOT have the revolving door of player auditions before finally settling on a roster. Signing, then releasing players and leaving them no Canadian playing options would be extremely bad for business. This would reflect poorly on the entire league and make future recruiting even more challenging. Last year was especially bad with new Viper players every game before Christmas and the players they replaced were traded or just released. Hockey Canada is clear that players who have signed with an outlaw league can not return to teams under the Hockey Canada umbrella. Penticton has done very well in the past with recruiting the players they want before camp starts, ie. they pretty well have their roster intact and make very few trades or releases. To be successful and credible all BCHL teams must embrace Penticton's philosophy to recruitment and stand by their selections. Hopefully this was discussed at the Executive Meeting.
I heard from a parent of an elite BC midget player that the decision to leave Hockey Canada was not anonymous, that at least 6 - 7 teams were out voted. It is also speculated that before long another Junior A league will be set up in BC. Time will tell if this historic decision by the BCHL Executive was wise or not. Paul is 100% correct, it is all about the players and supporting them. I hope the ownership will have the same focus.
The future gets cloudier. As Donnie and Dhali discuss, there is a rumour that the Aquilini family who own the Canucks, would like to purchase the Winnipeg Ice WHL team and move them to Chilliwack. The Ice haven't drawn well in Winnipeg. And would that send the Chilliwack Chiefs back to Quesnel, from whence they came? Quesnel has a new rink since they were last in the BCHL.

If there really were 6 or 7 teams voting against leaving Hockey Canada, I can really see a new Junior A league made up of teams wanting to stay inside Hockey Canada. Some of the BCHL teams would have a tough time meeting the financial goals of going rogue. The summer should have a lot of news.
