The Vernon Vipers were laughing and singing along to loud country music in their dressing room Wednesday night at Kal Tire Place.

It was a mild celebration considering they had just ambushed the last-place Surrey Eagles 9-0 before 1,450 fans.

Things get much tougher tonight when they visit the Merritt Centennials, 5-1 upset winners over the B.C. Hockey League leading Penticton Vees Wednesday. Vernon entertains the Powell River Kings Saturday (6 p.m.) before taking a two-week Christmas break.

Texan Thomas Aldworth pulled the hat trick as the Vipers built up period leads of 6-0 and 9-0 before head coach Mark Ferner played his third and fourth lines most of the final frame. Surrey dropped to 4-24-0-3.

“In the first period, we tried to keep them to the least number of shots as we could and then we kind of got away from that,” said Viper alternatre captain T.J. Dumonceaux, who earned 2+1. “It’s tough to get up for those games, but we’ll be ready for Merritt; it’s always hard to play there.”

The Eagles, who have 13 rookies after winning the Fred Page Cup two seasons ago, gave up six goals on 18 shots in the first period. The final shots tally was 44-33 Vernon.

Christian Shortt started in the Surrey net after being on injured reserve for almost seven weeks. The 19-year-old Ontario product, who was on NHL Central Scouting’s radar last year playing Prep school in New England, was relieved briefly by 16-year-old Daniel Davidson after Vernon went ahead 3-0 just seven minutes in.

Shortt played the final 40 minutes, earning a solid shutout in the third period when the shots were even at 12.

The Vipers, coming off an 8-2 thumping to the host Nanaimo Clippers in a Sunday matinee, got 1+2 from Liam Finlay and other goals from d-man Mitch Meek, Jagger Williamson and Riley Brandt.

Jarrod Schamerhorn pocketed his third shutout with 33 saves, including a handful of huge stops in the evenly-played third period. Vernon went 1-for-4 on the powerplay, while Surrey did not enjoy a man-advantage opportunity.

The Eagles, who made the return bus trip in the same day, looked decent in the early going but lost energy forward Spencer Meyer at 4:01 after he checked Brandt from behind into the side boards in Vernon’s zone. That left Surrey with 10 forwards, including two 17-year-old affiliates. Meyer, who turns 19 in January, joined Surrey 16 games ago after playing 32 games with three teams in the Western League.

Blaine Neufeld, 27, was promoted from director of player personnel to head coach when former NHLer Peter Schaefer stepped down after Chuck Westgard bought out his partners to become sole owner of the Eagles in May. The fallout from the move included Schaefer losing his title as team president.

Neufeld, a former WHL goalie who was a back-up with the 2007 Memorial Cup champion Vancouver Giants, says the Eagles are a fragile bunch who have lost a number of close games. He din’t like what he saw in warmup and realized the lengthy bus trip was foreign territory for his group.

“We assess things piece by piece,” said Neufeld, who hails from Winkler, Man. “We’re in a rebuild mode in terms of our culture and everything. Things you stress in that type of situation is attention to detail and preparation, and it wasn’t there today.”

Neufeld said the Eagles are not a team that holds a pity party after losses.

“You can’t expect it (morale) to be all that great. I think our kids do a fairly good job of kind of hitting the reset button. Nobody’s talking right now after this type of game and it’s not fun to be a part of. There’s a lot of anger and there should be. You don’t want kids to just roll over and allow it to happen.”

Big forward Quinn Lenihan, who netted 14 goals with the Junior B Grandview Steelers last year, said the Eagles are doing their best to be competitive.

“It’s a learning experience for everyone. We’re just trying to make the best of it, improve every week, week by week, game by game, shift by shift. That’s all you can do.”

He was impressed with his first glimpse of the Vipers, who have allowed just 91 goals, second best in the BCHL.

“Good speed, big physical players. I’d say they’re a bit faster, more skilled version of Langley.”

Vernon, not wishing to run up the score, played their young rookies a lot in the third period, trying hard to set up Linden Hora for his first career snipe. The Vipers, who are 9-2 in their last 11 games, improved to 21-9-1-2, 10 points behind the Vees.

First-line winger Liam Coughlin rang up three assists and leads the Vipers with 25 helpers. Aldworth has a team-high 24 snipes.

“Coach said to just keep playing hard no matter who we play,” said Coughlin. “We played well and hopefully it turns over into the two games we have this weekend games.”

Coughlin, an Oiler draft who gets regular calls from Edmonton GM Craig MacTavish, is anxious for a retreat at home in South Boston.

“I’m real excited to see my family, can’t wait. I’m taking my bag so I can get some skating in. The real hockey starts after Christmas. Last year when we came back, it was definitely more intense; everybody was going.”

SNAKE BITES: D Jordan Burns, a Vernon product, has been traded to the Salmon Arm Silverbacks for futures. Burns, a third-year veteran, has 3-13-16. He has a scholarship to the University of Alaska-Fairbanks next fall. Said Silverback head coach Brandon West: “Jordan is an experienced BCHL defenceman that brings a well-rounded game. I’ve coached Jordan in the past with the Okanagan Rockets (Major Midget) and it’s been great to watch him develop as a player. We’re confident he will have an immediate impact on our team.”...The Vipers were without F Trevor Fidler (concussion), while D Mitchell Oliver was a healthy scratch...Aldworth, on a solo rush and deke, and Meek, on a wrap-around, produced the nicest goals of the night...D-men Luke Shiplo and Johnny Coughlin each recorded two helpers...Jonah Imoo made 33 saves as the Cents (17-13-0-2) moved within three points of the third-place West Kelowna Warriors.

Oilers Release Former Viper Forward Santana:

The East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) Tulsa Oilers have released former Vernon Vipers forward Ryan Santana. The Oilers are in their first season in the ECHL after coming in this season as an expansion team after playing in the now defunct Central Hockey League.

The Oilers signed Santana on October 11th 2014.  Santana never played a game with Tulsa before being released on October 15th 2014.  No official press release by the Oilers but the transaction was posted on the ECHL website/transactions page.

Santana finished four years at Boston University before signing his first pro contract with the East Coast Hockey League Reading Royals on August 6th 2013. After playing in just 12 games with the Royals (going pointless) Santana was released on March 6th 2014 before being re-signed on March 9th 2014 and just three days later was released on March 12th 2014 for a second time last season.

Santana was picked up off waivers on March 15th 2014 by the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) South Carolina Stingrays where he would finish the season. In 12 games last season with South Carolina Santana collected two assists.

Santana played one season in Vernon (2008-2009) In 56 games with the Vipers collected (12-goals-13-assists-25-points).

Nanaimo Clippers forward Nicolas Carrier has been named the BCHL Player of the Week for the week ending Dec. 14, the league announced Monday.

Carrier helped his club to three wins in as many games and racked up six points along the way. He set up a pair of goals and was named 3rd Star in a 3-1 road win over the Cowichan Valley Capitals to begin his week. The Delson, Que. product followed that with two goals, including the game-winner, in a 5-2 win over the Alberni Valley Bulldogs where he took 1st Star and concluded his spree with a goal and an assist for 2nd Star in an 8-2 win over the Vernon Vipers.

For anyone who could not attend or watch tonight’s Vipers game here are my thoughts and views from tonight’s game. You may agree or disagree but we all have our own view and opinion on any game we watch. This is my opinion and my thoughts on how I saw tonight’s game. I try to be unbiased and give a fare recap on both sides. Thanks for stopping by & visiting my blog.

I was at tonight's Vipers-Eagles game as Vernon defeated Surrey 9-0 in front of 1,446 fans at Kal Tire Place.

Starting Goaltenders:

Vernon: Jarrod Schamerhorn
Surrey: Christian Short

1st Period: Off the opening draw Surrey come out hitting, laying out some heavy checks on the Vipers.  The Eagles had their eyes on several different Vernon players early, going after a few Vipers.  The Vipers would get a great opportunity just less then two minutes into the game after Liam Finlay on a two on one tried feathering a pass out front, Finlay's pass ended up going off a Surrey defenceman before goaltender Christian Short had to be alert made the save off his own team mate on Vernon's first shot of the night.  The Eagles carried the early edge in play before the Vipers would get the games first powerplay.  Spencer Meyer would get tossed from the game after checking Riley Brandt from behind.  Brandt was a little slow to get up but was ok and stayed in the game.  Just four minutes into the opening period Vernon setup on the man advantage, Liam Finlay setup TJ Dumonceaux in front who shot low to the ice beat Short at 4:15 put Vernon up 1-0.  Finlay & Luke Shiplo collected the helpers.  Just fifteen seconds later Johnny Coughlin looked to have an open cage fired a quick shot towards the goal was stopped by Short before Liam Finlay pounced on the rebound gave the Vipers a early 2-0 lead at 4:30 Coughlin and Jagger Williamson with the assists.  Less then three minutes later Thomas Aldworth looked to bank his shot off Christian Short and in giving Vernon a 3-0 lead at 7:19 Brandon Egli with the helper.  This was the end of the night for Short who was pulled after giving up three goals on eleven Vernon shots, was replaced by backup goaltender Daniel Davidson.  Just over two minutes later Thomas Aldworth would pick up his second of the night giving the Vipers a 4-0 lead and in full control at 10:33 after a nice give and go with Liam Coughlin.  Coughlin and Luke Shiplo picked up the assists.  The Vipers were outshooting the Eagles 11-2 at this point and were in full control.  Surrey managed to come back with a bit of a push got some of their first real pressure in the Vernon zone didnt really generate any offence.  Brandon Egli with a quick shot from the point was redircted on its way to the net forced Davidson to make a tough save.  TJ Dumonceaux with his second of the period gave the Vipers a 5-0 lead at 17:52 Liam Coughlin with the helper.  Less then two minutes later Riley Brandt gave Vernon a 6-0 lead at 19:26 Colton McCarthy & Mitch Meek picked up the assists.  Vernon was up 6-0 after 20 minutes of play.  The Eagles come out hitting, played physical but also played with a bit of an edge were in the faces of the Vipers most of the period.  Surrey with a ton of stick work were working over the Vipers during the play as well as between stopages stiring up the pot on several occasions.  The Eagles with very little offence were outplayed and dominated most of the opening period other then a few minutes of pressure as it was all Vipers.  Vernon opened the scoring early and never looked back were all over the last place Eagles.  The Vipers outshot the Eagles 18-5.

2nd Period: Christian Short started the frame in goal for Surrey replacing Daniel Davidson who replaced Short during the 1st period.  Davidson gave up four goals on seven Viper shots.  Twenty seconds into the middle frame Thomas Aldworth with his third of the evening put the Vipers up 7-0 at 0:20 after a wicked wrist shot from the circle.  TJ Dumonceaux and Liam Coughlin with the assists.  Vernon looked to take their foot off the gas as Surrey slowly gave the Vipers a strong push as the Eagles with a ton of pressure had the Viper defence skating in circles.  For several minutes Vernon couldnt clear the zone as the Eagles were pressing.  Jarrod Schamerhorn just about got caught out of position come back to make a huge save off Cole Plotnikoff.  Schamerhorn had to be good made several saves with Surrey on the attack.  Just a few minutes later Latrell Charleson's point shot either hit someone or was deflected on its way to the net went up and over landing on top of the Vernon net before bouncing off and behind the goal on a weird shot-play.  The Vipers would eventually respond come back with a strong shift.  Jagger Williamson at the side of the net put the Vipers up 8-0 at 8:33 Riley Guenther & Liam Finlay picked up the assists.  Just less then three minutes later Mitch Meek with a nice rush beat Eagles starting goaltender Christian Short on a wrap around gave Vernon a 9-0 lead at 11:30 Johnny Coughlin with the assist.  Surrey had a bit of an edge outplayed Vernon for several minutes in the first half.  Tempers heated up in a hurry just past the midway mark as a mini line brawl took place with almost everyone on the ice, minus the goaltenders were going at one another.  Atleast two minor scrums-fights took place as the Eagles were really getting under the skin of the Vernon players.  Three Surrey players were all over Thomas Aldworth wich started this mess.  The Vipers would come away with the man advantage.  Vernon would struggle as the Eagles gained more control of the puck shorthanded then the Vipers on the PP.  Surrey was able to kill odd the minor as both teams went back to five on five.  The Eagles once again come back with a bit of a push had a few good looks on goal but no real scoring threat.  The Vipers with a strong surge to finish the period had a couple of opportunities.  Luke Voltin looked to beat Christian Short with four and a half minutes remaining but hit the post.  With two minutes to go Colton McCarthy setup Blaine Caton on a two on one but Caton couldnt beat Short in close.  The Vipers with a few good shifts ended the second period on a good note, were up 9-0 after 40 minutes of play.  The Vipers took their foot off the gas, played their third and fourth lines lots, sat back on a 6-0 lead before scoring three times in the first twelve minutes.  The Eagles had a few hard working shifts, had their best scoring chances of the night generated some offence and pressure but were unable to beat Jarrod Schamerhorn.  For the second straight period the Eagles played physical and with an edge were very chippy through out the game.  Several minutes went by with not alot of anything going on as both teams really slowed down the pace, making it look like a pond hockey game at times.  I thought Surrey had the better of the play gave up three goals were down by nine heading into the final frame.  Surrey outshot Vernon 16-14.

3rd Period: The Vipers would get an early powerplay but for the second straight man advantage couldnt get much of anything going as the Eagles penalty kill didnt look to bad.  The Vipers showing off their speed had several good looks-opportunities come very close on several occasions to reaching double digits but couldnt beat Christian Short.  Nicholas Rasovic with a parcial breakaway couldnt beat the Eagles goaltender.  Riley Brandt and Jagger Williamson with good looks couldnt put Vernon up by ten.  Surrey managed to get a few opportunities but no real quality chances couldnt get the puck past Jarrod Schamerhorn.  For the second straight period Vernon took their foot off the gas at times, played lines 3 & 4 lots.  Again not alot of action at both ends of the rink seemed to really slow down the pace making for some pretty boring hockey.  The Vipers would get a late powerplay but for the third time couldnt capitalize.  Vernon would come away with the convincing 9-0 victory.  Not much fight from either team in a 9-0 game.  The Vipers showed spurts getting some good looks at the net, created a few good opportunities come close but couldnt get goal #10.  The Eagles also had a few good looks at the Viper goal but Jarrod Schamerhorn made the routine saves to collect the shutout.  Shots were even 12-12.

Top Players: (Vernon)

Mitch Meek (1 goal & 1 assist) I thought played a strong game on the Viper blueline. 

The line of Liam Coughlin (3 assists), TJ Dumonceaux (2 goals & 1 assist) & Thomas Aldworth (3 goals) was the Vipers top line going tonight.  The Eagles had troubles all evening containing these three who collected nine points between the three.  This line was really clicking, made some nice passing plays-created some nice scoring plays.

Jagger Williamson (1 goal & 1 assist) Was a little spark plug tonight, was really using his wheels and team speed to generate and create chances.  Scored once, added an assist was really buzzing.  This kid has come a long ways from the start of the pre-season-regular season to where he is today.  Has really improved, got better and been playing very well as of late.

Liam Finlay (1 goal and 2 assists) Collected three points was another speedster up front for the Vernon Vipers.  Finlay was skating hard, generated and created some good opportunities tonight.

Riley Brandt (1 goal) Played and worked very hard all night, again was flying, played with alot of jump and energy was going hard up and down the wing added that speed to the Viper lineup, also wasnt afraid to get mixed up in the physical play from time to time.

Jarrod Schamerhorn (33 saves-Shutout) Picked up his third shutout of the season.  Didnt see alot of rubber but made the saves when called apon.  I thought was tested a few times in the 2nd period when the Eagles were all over Vernon for a few minutes, Schamerhorn was forced to make atleast two big saves played well all night.

Game Thought's: (Vernon)

After a 8-2 loss in Nanaimo Sunday afternoon the Vipers responded well with a 9-0 victory over the Surrey Eagles.  These games can be very tough on teams like the Vipers knowing the Eagles are in last place, have just four wins on the season, have yet to win on the road and have just one win in their last twenty games.  Give the Vipers credit they jumped on Surrey early and often and were out to a 6-0 lead after the opening period.  The Vipers let up on the offensive attack during the 2nd and 3rd periods, taking their foot off the gas had little spurts of scoring chances but basically sat back on a six goal lead.  At times Vernon sat back too comfortably and were lucky they didnt allow a goal but responded well with a strong push back.  For most of the game Vernon dominated the game in all aspects from top to bottom.  From a fans point of view this wasnt much of a hockey game, other then the Vipers padding some of their own personal stats.  Once Vernon sat back, and took their foot off the gas this was more like a beer league or pond hockey game at times.  The Vipers will now finish off 2014 with two tough games vs Merritt and Powell River this weekend before the Christmas break. 

Top Players: (Surrey)

Latrell Charleson saw a ton of icetime tonight, logged alot of minutes was almost out there every second shift played well on the Eagles defence.  This kid towered over several Viper players played with a bit of an edge, had a bit of a mean streak in his game.

Ben Vikich didnt really do much offensively did play with alot of speed, seemed to always be involved in the play-rush but just didnt generate any real chances for the Eagles.  I thought he skated well, played hard and competed.

Joseph Drapluk I thought was Surrey's most dangerous player.  Another kid who was involved in the play when the Eagles had posession of the play-puck.  Seemed to have a nose for the net.  The Eagles didnt have alot of offensive chances, but Drapluk was always in and around the net.

Game Thought's: (Surrey)

The Eagles have a big hockey club, played physical but also played with an edge.  This Eagles team was very chippy most of the night, taking several deliberate hits-stick work to several different Vernon players through out the game.  Surrey started or tried starting several altercations after the whistle during the 1st and 2nd periods.  The Eagles with lots of stick work tried going after the Vipers most of the night.  The Eagles who were outplayed and dominated after the 1st period had alot more puck posession and more zone time with the Vipers sitting back.  The Eagles played much better in the 2nd period outshot the Vipers but couldnt find the back of the net.  Surrey's better scoring opportunities were in the middle frame didnt generate a whole lot of offensive attack in all three periods.  The Eagles had troubles most of the night slowing down and containing the Vipers top line as well as Vernon's speed.  This was a long night for Surrey who is in for a very long season.  This team isnt very good and was outplayed most of the night.  Both goaltenders were hung out to dry on alot of Vernons goals.

The defending Interior Division Conference Champion Vernon Vipers return home from a three game road trip where they went 2-1 over the weekend.  The Vipers are coming off a 8-2 loss in Nanaimo Sunday afternoon snapped a four game winning streak.  Vernon sits 2nd place in the Interior Division are twelve points back of 1st place Penticton.  The Vipers are four points up on West Kelowna and seven points up on Merritt.  Vernon has won four of their last five and are 8-2-0-0 in their last ten games.  The Vipers have just five regulation losses on home ice will finish 2014 with two of their final three games at home.  Vernon won two of the three meetings vs the Eagles last season will play in Surrey on January 11th 2015.

The Surrey Eagles make their first and only visit of the regular season to Kal Tire Place this evening.  The Eagles are coming off a 6-5 loss to the visiting Langley Rivermen Sunday afternoon.  Surrey comes into tonight's contest having lost three straight.  Surrey sits last in the Mainland Division and last overall in the League with just four wins.  The Eagles come into tonight's game without a win on the road going 0-12-0-2 this season away from home.  The Eagles has just one win in their last five and are 1-9-0-0 in their last ten games.  Surrey has just one win in their last twenty games.  The Eagles have scored a league low 78 goals this season while giving up a league worst 168 goals.

Vipers set for Surrey Eagles

Just call it a week-long, pre-Christmas cruise with stops in Powell River, Port Alberni and Nanaimo along with a pair of excursions at Kal Tire Place.

And while there wasn’t any seven-course dinners or penthouse hot tubbing, the cruise turned out to be pretty pleasurable for the Vernon Vipers.

Three wins, one loss and a date with the last-place Surrey Eagles tonight at The Big Wheel has the Vipers in decent shape well into the second-half of the B.C. Hockey League season.

The Vipers, blown out 8-2 by the Nanaimo Clippers Sunday afternoon at Frank Crane Arena, are fourth overall in the 16-team BCHL and second  in the Interior Division at 20-9-1-2. Vernon is 8-2 in their last 10 games.

The Shipmen rang up six third-period goals – two on the powerplay – as they improved to 23-10-0-1, second overall behind the Penticton Vees.

“They were at the end of a road trip, so we knew if we came at them hard, they were going to give up sooner or later,” said Clipper forward Brett Roulston. “I think that’s what we did. We pushed them all game and eventually they broke.”

And they did so still without three of their top-four scorers in Devin Brosseau, Sheldon Rempal and Jake Jackson. Rempal is at the World Junior Hockey Challenge in Kindersley, Sask., while Brosseau and Jackson are injured.

Clipper head coach Mike Vandekamp, who won a Fred Page Cup with Vernon,  said the key was not to let the Vipers carry any momentum.

“We felt like if we were good in the first half, we might be able to take ‘er over in the second half and run them out of gas a little bit and I think that’s probably how it played out,” said Vandekamp.

Aggressive forechecking and finishing checks, Vandekamp said, are ways to wear down opponents.

“If anything, I think it’s just a matter of not making anything easy on them,” the coach said.

Assistant coach Kevin Kraus said the Vipers were hoping to finish the road trip with a strong third period.

“We had a decent first two periods for our fourth game in five nights, but we just collapsed in the third period,” said Kraus. “We looked tired, we were frustrated, we took some penalties and we folded our tent and got complacent which is something we will address.”

Nanaimo took a 2-1 lead into the third period and then scored goals 10 seconds apart early in the frame. Vernon responded right away, making it 4-2, but the Clippers kept coming.

Brendan Taylor (2), Anthony Rinaldi (1+2),  Nick Guerra, Player of the Week Nicolas Carrier, Roulston, Cole Maier and Jacob Hanlon handled the Clipper attack. T.J. Dumonceaux, with his 12th of the year, and Riley Brandt, with his fifth, on a gorgeous roof daddy, responded for the Vipers.

Vernon product Spencer Hewson pocketed three assists for Nanaimo, earning the Fortis Energy Player of the Game.

Guillaume Decelles, whose .927 save percentage is the highest in the league, made 32 saves for his 20th win. He’s in his first year with Nanaimo after playing 42 games in the Quebec Major League over two seasons.

“Basically we just played a team game. All lines were firing,” said Roulston. “We’re short-staffed right now, so it was real important that everyone was going.”

Vandekamp coached the Vipers for two years, guiding them to the 2003 Fred Page Cup with a sweep over the Chilliwack Chiefs.

“I’ve been gone from there for a long time, but there’s still a personal connection to those people and the old jersey. It’s good memories for me,” he said. “So yeah, I think they’re always a little special, probably the ones back in their rink even more so.”

Jarrod Schamerhorn gave up six goals before giving way to call-up Gunnar Neilsen in front of 1,100 fans.

In Port Alberni, the Vipers grabbed a 2-0 lead on goals from Thomas Aldworth (his 21st) and another top-shelf beauty from Brandt, who celebrated his 18th birthday Friday, in a 5-3 win over the Bulldogs.

Chris Schutz, with his 17th, and Eric Margo, with his third, levelled the score late in the second period. Liam Coughlin netted his 12th to put the Snakes up by one with 46 seconds left in the period.

The Moser Medical Graz 99ers have signed former Vernon Vipers
forward Tyler Scofield.  The Moser Medical Graz 99ers are an Austrian ice hockey team from Graz, Styria that play in the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga hockey league.

Scofield spent the past four seasons in Austria with Klagenfurter Athletiksport.  Klagenfurt AC is a professional ice hockey team from Klagenfurt, Carinthia, Austria that plays in the Austrian Erste Bank Hockey League.

In 49 games last season Scofield collected (18-goals-10-assists-28-points). Scofield played parts of two seasons in Vernon (2000-2002) before being traded to Prince George during the 2001-2002 season. The Vipers sent Scofield and Mark Nelson to the Spruce Kings in return for Rod Pelly, Dan Rossi & Josh Ciocco. In 79 games with the Vipers Scofield collected (21-goals-19-assists-40-points).

Thunder Trade Former Viper Robin To SJHL:

The Alberta Junior Hockey League Drayton Valley Thunder
traded former Vernon Vipers forward Landon Robin to the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League Melfort Mustangs.

Robin was recruited by the Vipers started the 2012-13 season with Vernon before being traded to Powell River on November, 29th 2012 for future considerations. In 23 games with the Vipers Robin collected (1-4-5).  The Kings traded Robin to the MJHL Winnipeg Blues on August 23rd 2013 before even playing a single game, the Blues turned around trading Robin to the SJHL La Ronge IceWolves on August 27th 2013.  The IceWolves traded Robin to the AJHL Drayton Valley Thunder over the off season.

Bring in Landon Robin from the AJHL

The Melfort Mustangs have acquired 94 born forward Landon Robin from the Drayton Valley Thunder of the Alberta Junior Hockey League for future considerations.

Robin, a Saskatoon product played his AAA with the Beardy’s Blackhawks before joining the Vernon Vipers of the BCHL in 2012.

After one season in BC, Robin was traded to the La Ronge Ice Wolves where he put up 34 points in 55 games last season.

An off-season trade saw his rights moved to Alberta prior to this season. In Drayton Valley he appeared in 16 games, collecting 4 points.

He is expected to be in Melfort in time for tomorrow night’s game vs the Battlefords North Stars.

HOCKEY PLAYER SURPRISES DAD

It was a special night for Vernon Vipers forward TJ Dumonceaux who was able to surprise his father with a special Movember presentation before a BCHL game against the Trail Smoke Eaters. Earlier this year Dumonceaux’s father Perry was diagnosed with prostate cancer and TJ wanted to use the team’s Movember fundraiser to do something special for his Dad.

So with the help of his teammates and an online campaign, the Kelowna native quietly went to work to try to raise $3,000.00 to donate to Cancer research on behalf of his father. On Saturday, November 29th the team convinced the senior Dumonceaux to come onto the ice to supposedly present his son a ‘community award’. Instead TJ surprised his dad with his framed Movember jersey and a cheque for $5,641.00 to be donated to the Canadian Cancer society. But the story doesn’t end there, the veteran forward would go on to score two goals and was named the game’s first star!

The Nanaimo Clippers won their second straight after a 5-2 win over the visiting Alberni Valley Bulldogs Friday evening.  The Clippers sit atop the Island Division second overall in the BCHL nine points back of league leading Penticton.  Nanaimo is ten points up on 2nd place Powell River has lost three of their last five games and are 6-3-0-1 in their last ten.  The Clippers are lead by former Vernon Vipers Head Coach-GM Mike Vandekamp who is in his fourth season with Nanaimo.  Tonight is the first of two meetings between these two teams as Nanaimo will travel and play in Vernon on February 14th.

Vipers outlast Powell River

A late flurry by the Powell River Kings failed to derail the Vernon Vipers, who held on for a 4-3 B.C. Hockey League win in front of 744 fans Friday night at Hap Parker Arena.

With the Snakes ahead 3-1, the teams combined for a trio of goals in the final 96 seconds, two by the Kings, who pulled netminder Brett Magnus for the extra attacker.

Adam Tracey (1st goal), squeaking a high shot from the slot under third star Jarrod Schamerhorn’s arm, cut the lead to one. It was his first of the season. Thomas Aldworth (20th goal), on a feed from first star Liam Coughlin, had his wrister bounce up and over Magnus just seven seconds later.

Powell River’s Austin Kamer, with his third, completed the offence by scoring directly off a faceoff with 38 seconds to play.

“That’s not really how you draw it up in the game-plan, but give them credit that they didn’t quit,” said Vipers’ head coach Mark Ferner. “We’ve got to be a lot more responsible in our own end.”

Second star Jacob Pritchard (18th) opened the scoring for Powell River on a first-period powerplay. With the Kings enjoying some sustained pressure on the man advantage, he walked walked the blueline and buried a nice top-shelf snipe.

In his first game back after missing three weeks to injury, captain Riley Guenther recorded his first of the season when his shot from left point took a deflection off a Powell River defender in the second period.

“It’s a monkey off his back for sure,” said Vipers’ assistant coach Kevin Kraus. “It was good for the team and the guys were happy for him.”

Coughlin (11th) gave Vernon the lead 4:23 into period three when he took a feed from Liam Finlay down low and stuffed one past Magnus.

Trevor Fidler, outworking a handful of Kings in driving to the net to collected his eighth of the year.

“It was a bit of a slow start, but eventually we got going,” said Kraus.

Schamerhorn finished with 33 saves for his 12th win. Magnus made 27 stops.

The win keeps Vernon (19-8-1-2) four points ahead of the West Kelowna Warriors (16-10-0-5) for second place in the Interior Division. The Kings, who have a pair of players (d-man Carmine Buono and forward Kurt Keats) competing with Team Canada West at the World Junior A Challenge, dipped to 14-9-0-7.

The Snakes continued a three-game coastal swing Saturday against the Alberni Valley Bulldogs (15-11-1-2) at Wayerhaeuser Arena.

The road trip ends today with a matinee against Mike Vandekamp’s Nanaimo Clippers (22-10-0-1) at Frank Crane Arena.

“They’re (Nanaimo) an older team,” said Kraus. “Their only 17-year-old is a backup goalie. They’re a team Vandy is trying to gear up for a championship. It’s going to be tough going in on the back end of a 3-in-3.”

The Clippers rallied with four unanswered third-period goals to ground the Bulldogs 5-2 in their Friday-night tilt. Nicolas Carrier and Brendan Taylor, each with a deuce, paced the second-overall shipmen.

In other Interior action Friday, the Salmon Arm Silverbacks drew the league-leading Penticton Vees 2-2, the Merritt Centennials shaded the Prince George Spruce Kings 3-2 in overtime, and West Kelowna bounced the Trail Smoke Eaters 4-3 in OT.

SNAKE BITES: Injured netminder Danny Todosychuk did not travel with the Vipers to the coast. Instead, they called up Gunnar Neilson from Abbotsford’s Yale Hockey Academy for backup duty...Former Viper twins Connor and Kellen Jones were recalled by the AHL Oklahoma City Barons from the ECHL Bakersfield Condors Friday. Connor leads the Condors, and all ECHL rookies, with 25 points (9G, 16A) in 25 games. Kellen is second on the Condors with 6-17-23 in 25 games. The Barons hosted the Grand Rapids Griffins Saturday night.
