Forty six years ago today (August 1st 1980) The Vernon Daily News released an article thar Greg Neilson of Vernon won two season tickets for recently choosing the new name of Vernon's junior hockey team (Vernon Lakers). In June 1980 league govenors voted to readmit Vernon back into the British Columbia Junior Hockey League after the Vernon Canadians took a leave of absence for the 1979-80 season.

The Vernon Lakers were one of seven different team names Vernon's junior hockey team previously had since joining the league in 1961. The Vernon Lakers were around from 1980-1995 before changing their name to the Vernon Vipers in 1995.
