Introducing Denim on the Diamond, Kelowna's newest music festival

JAMES MILLER, Managing Editor

Apr 24, 2018

Put me in, coach — I’m ready to play.

Kelowna’s newest music festival was announced Tuesday, appropriately enough on the playing field at Kings Stadium.

The inaugural Denim on the Diamond will be staged Saturday, Sept. 1, at Kings Stadium beginning at 2 p.m. and wrapping up at 11 p.m. It’s described by organizers as a combination of food, drink and live music with Knox Mountain as a scenic backdrop.

Eight-time Juno award nominee Chad Brownlee, who hails from Kelowna, will headline the music. Other scheduled performers include JoJo Mason, Devon Coyote, Ben Klick and Tiger Moon. All of the acts have ties to the Okanagan and most are from the new-country genre of music.

Twenty local businesses are already on board including food services from Surfside California & Crasian, Dunnenzies and QB Gelato, and beverages by BNA, Kitsch, BC Tree Fruits, Dirty Laundry and Canoe Coffee.

“This will be a community event to celebrate the end of summer and all things Okanagan,” said Mitch Carefoot, who is co-organizing the event with Kurt Jory. “We wanted an event made by the people of Kelowna for the people of Kelowna, and to keep it community-focused while really supporting all the great bands and businesses we have here.”

Tickets for the ages-19-and-over event are now on sale. Early bird prices are $50 for general admission and $100 for VIP.

Kelowna Mayor Colin Basran said it’s nice to see the Kings Stadium neighbourhood in the north end being built up with a focus on local breweries, wineries and homes. Basran remembers, as a child, watching his father play fastball there. The grandstands were nicknamed “The Zoo” due to the raucous atmosphere.

In addition to the headliners, a talent search will be launched in co-operation with the OK Corral and Cabaret with the winner receiving a spot on the stage.

Get out your cowboy boots and get ready to rock the night away to country music in true Okanagan fashion.

Kelowna is getting its own country music festival, Denim on the Diamond.

The event will take place Sept. 1 at King Stadium, from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m., showcasing the Okanagan’s best artists and local businesses.

“There is an opportunity and a need for an event that is produced by locals, for locals and that supports local business,” said organizer Mitch Carefoot.

“What we have in mind is bringing all these different businesses from around the Okanagan to Kelowna and over the next few years build something we are proud of (that) is a representation of Kelowna and what we love to do.”

Mayor Colin Basran said King Stadium used to be a community hub.

“I am really excited about the fact that this place has so much history – and we are going to write a few more chapters,” said Basran.

The headliner for Denim on the Diamond will be Kelowna’s Chad Brownlee.

“Chad has spent time on the diamond, and his dad used to be a ball umpire here,” said Carefoot.

CCMA Rising Star nominated artist Jojo Mason, Devon Coyote, Ben Klick, and Tiger Moon round out the line up.

Covering the food front will be Surfside California & Crasian and Dunnenzies. Local brew pub BNA is partnering with the concert, along with Kitsch Winery, Dirty Laundry Winery and B.C. Tree Fruits.

Early bird tickets will be available online at www.denimonthediamond.com starting Wednesday.
