In the first player-for-player trade of his career, Kamloops Storm general manager Barry Dewar is hoping he has given his team’s offence the spark it needs.

Kamloops sent three players — forward Ryland Chernomaz and defencemen Patrick Nicholson and Andre Piquette — to the North Okanagan Knights on Thursday, in a deal that will see forward Zackari Andrusiak suit up for the Storm this season.

“He’ll provide goals that we haven’t been getting,” Dewar told KTW.

The Storm rank 10th in goals-for this season with 64, by far the fewest of any division leader in the KIJHL.

“His forte is scoring goals and that’s what we need right now — someone who can put the puck in the net.”

In 37 games with the Knights last season, Andrusiak tallied 37 points, including 14 goals. He has had three stints in the junior A B.C. Hockey League, scoring three points in 26 career games, and was recently released by the Vernon Vipers.

He is also pointless in seven career WHL games with the Tri-City Americans.

Dewar said the deal was a difficult one to make, but was best for everyone involved.

“The kid we’re getting is really good. He’s a kid we wanted last year and it didn’t work out,” he said of the impetus for the trade.

“His rights belong to North Ok, so we had to make a deal and it’s a really good deal for the three guys leaving us — they’ll get more playing time and an opportunity to show what they can do.”

Chernomaz leaves Kamloops after playing 16 games for the Storm. He came to the club after leaving the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League earlier this season. He notched eight points, including one goal with the Storm.

Piquette and Nicholson both saw time on Kamloops’ blueline, with the former notching one assist in 11 games and the latter scoring five points, including two goals, in 12 games.

Andrusiak is expected to be in the Storm’s lineup this weekend, as the club begins a five-game road trip that will see it make stops in Kimberley to face the Dynamiters, Fernie to play the Ghostriders, Creston to battle the Creston Valley Thunder Cats, Chase to take on the Heat and Revelstoke to challenge the Grizzlies.

Kamloops will return to the Tournament Capital on Nov. 22 for a rematch against Revelstoke.

The Storm are 7-3-0-0 in their last 10 games and remain atop the Doug Birks Division, boasting a 15-4-0-1 record.
