ST. PAUL, Minn. — Shawn Hunwick stopped all 40 shots he faced, and Ben Winnett scored the game-winner midway through the first period to lead the Michigan Wolverines to a 2–0 win over North Dakota in the semifinals of the NCAA tournament.
The Fighting Sioux dominated for long stretches of the game, outshooting Michigan 40–20, including 26–7 over the final two periods.
Michigan opened the scoring at 13:26 of the first period. After Jon Merrill hit the near post, Winnett got to the rebound through traffic and waited out Fighting Sioux goaltender Aaron Dell before putting a wrist shot inside the far post.
North Dakota’s Matt Frattin had several good chances, the best coming with 1:05 to play in the first period. He intercepted an errant clearing attempt and walked in all alone on Hunwick, firing wide from 20 feet out.
Dell came out for an extra attacker with 1:12 to play, but Michigan’s Scooter Vaughan finished a nice breakout with an empty-net goal to seal the win with 36 seconds to play.
It was Hunwick’s fourth shutout of the season, and the first loss for No. 1 North Dakota since Jan. 28. The Wolverines will play Minnesota-Duluth in the national championship game on Saturday.
