Clippers Aquire Former Vipers Goaltender Segal:

Former Vernon Vipers goaltender, Mark Segal has landed a backup job with the BCHL's Nanaimo Clippers. Segal who made the Vipers team last year was the backup to Andrew Hammond to start the 2008-09 season. (Mark Segal on the left and Andrew Hammond on the right, in picture above) Segal played in just one game with Vernon losing 3-1 to Prince George. In October the Vipers had aquired Graeme Gordon from the Merritt Centennials, and reassigned Segal to the Richmond Sockeyes of the Pacific International Junior Hockey League.

Nanaimo added netminder Mark Segal from the North Delta Devils of the Pacific International Junior Hockey League (junior B). Segal, 18, was the top goalie in the PIJHL this season with a 5-0 record and stingy 1.20 GAA. Segal who is drafted by the WHL's Vancouver Giants was re-assigned in mid September to the North Delta Devils after being the Giants went with 16-year-old rookie Brendan Jensen, a California native, as the back-up to starting goaltender Jamie Tucker, 18.

In order to make room for Segal the Clippers traded goaltender, Chad Carder back to the AJHL's Grande Prairie Storm. Carder was acquired by the Clippers from the Merritt Centennials on May 15. The Cents got the rights to Carder from Grande Prairie just five days earlier to complete a previous transaction. Carder was the Alberta Junior Hockey League's top goaltender in the 2008-09 season. The 20-year-old Calgary native was 0-4 with a 4.74 goals against average for the Clippers this year.

Loic Boivin, who had been getting the bulk of the playing time in goal of late for the Clippers is cemented as the No. 1 man between the pipes with Mark Segal as the teams new backup.
