The Vernon Vipers are thrilled to announce that forward Simon Binkley has officially committed to the University of Alaska Fairbanks to continue his academic and athletic career.
A native of Fairbanks, Alaska, Binkley has had an impressive rookie season in the BCHL, showcasing his well-rounded game. In his first season with the Vipers, Binkley has recorded 1 goal and 7 assists, while demonstrating his dedication to improving all aspects of his play.
Reflecting on his commitment, Binkley shared his excitement about the opportunity to return home and play for the Nanooks. “I’m super excited to make it official and finally come home and play in front of friends and family,” said Binkley. “I grew up going to the games and the Nanooks were my biggest inspiration growing up. The facilities are second to none and with them being so close to home, it seemed like the perfect fit.”
The Alaska Nanooks men’s ice hockey team competes at the NCAA Division I level and plays its home games at the Carlson Center in Fairbanks. The Nanooks have a strong history of player development and success, and Binkley joins a proud tradition of Vernon Vipers alumni who have gone on to play for Alaska. Notable Vipers who have donned the Nanooks’ jersey include current Assistant Coach Colton Sparrow, as well as Chris and Steven Jandric.
The Vernon Vipers organization congratulates Simon Binkley and his family on this outstanding achievement.
I didn't think Cleaves was having a good season, so was a little surprised to see him announced to the 2025 Top Prospects Game. Cleaves struggled this season, took way too many undisciplined penalties & struggled defensively. I wasn't happy with his play on most nights.
Its obvious you don't know hockey at all. He was clearly their best defenseman leading them offensively and defensively. And hes getting recognized for it.
I agree 100% Paul... Cleaves has a huge upside but needs a quality coach to work on the finer parts of his game. He is not getting that in Vernon... he, his parents & advisor obviously recognize that. Hate to see him go but I am sure it is the best decision for his development.
I loved Cleaves as a Defenceman, and I wish I could've gotten the opportunity to see Brennan, Stavrianeas and Cleaves on a Powerplay together. where did you hear about Stavrianeas asking for a trade diehard? When Vernon won their games, it was When all 3 of those guys would play well. They were the 3 keys to Vernon's success.
Cleaves makes the All star game and leaves....More guys will leave guaranteed. Watch there will be more moves after the break as more guys will ask out or walk....Hearing more guys asked out already....team had 33 wins last year and whole team is gone but one player.
Several fans/billets reporting at the Vipers/Bandits game last weekend Stavrianeas asked for a trade and the reason why he didn't play last weekend. Lots of rumors at both Vipers games last weekend that several other players also want out of Vernon.
The Glens have made several huge mistakes since buying the team.
1 - Getting rid of Mark Ferner, one of the greatest Jr A coaches and a coach that brought the Vipers to three straight National Championships, winning two of them
2 - Replacing Mark Ferner with Jason McKee. Are you kidding me? How did that go for ya?
3 - Keeping Jason McKee and his average Vipers teams at best for five long years. A terrible coach that should have been fired much much sooner
4 - Allowing your son/nephew to not only try out for the Vipers but to allow him to make the team and play here for three years, three years way too long. A kid who was a Jr B player at best. His performance and stats proved that.
In seven years of ownership the Vipers have been an average/mediocre team at best with very little regular season or playoff success. There best regular season was last season posting a 33-19-2-0 record
Until the Real Viper fans and followers start taking this public , boycott the owners will stay . If covid 19 can stand by polson park voicing their displeasure then viper fans need to get out with signs and start protesting “ we want new owners “ DO IT VERNON !!
I’m a REAL fan and will continue to support this team. Protesting solves nothing. Just makes someone look unintelligent as they don’t have all the information. The team is in a terrible uncomfortable spot, it will pass. The team won’t be sold as the Glenn’s are too proud to do that. Fans who remember how great the Vipers have been will move on and new fans will replace them in the seats.
Do you know that there isn't a draft in this league Ben? The reason teams in other leagues have lean years is because they load up for a playoff run and then have to DRAFT replacements after the players move on. The BCHL has NO DRAFT so teams are able to sign players and rebuild a roster immediately. Problem is this organization shoots itself in the foot by releasing everyone and then wonders why they are terrible. If they had kept the original roster mostly intact I could accept that they were trying to build a long term successful team.
Don't worry fans. I know this league seems like a mess but like anything knew it usually takes a couple of years of frustration before things get better and if nothing changes and doesn't then like most things it will fade into the distance and something else will appear. What I don't know. Will just have to be patience and wait and see. In the mean time lets just enjoy hockey. GO,VIPERS.GO.
Also, yesterday….

Heard cooper cleaves is leaving to the ushl as of this morning from a super reliable source. AKA JOHN GLENN
ReplyDeleteCleaves is now a Green Bay Gambler(USHL)

ReplyDeleteHe was an automatic pick for the team as was on the last nhl watch list. Everyone on that list was automatically put in the prospects game.
DeleteIts obvious you don't know hockey at all. He was clearly their best defenseman leading them offensively and defensively. And hes getting recognized for it.
DeleteCleaves will be a AWESOME defensmen, all he needs is the right coach!

ReplyDeleteIn my opinion; players don’t leave a good organizations and Solid coaching, team results are irrelevant with both of these.
ReplyDeleteThe revolving door is 100 % created by Glenn, and as for the team’s record solely on the shoulders of pathetic coaching.
We want our Vipers back so hit the road Glenn and take your 3 stooges behind the bench with you.
Long Time Viper Fan !
As long as you keep going to games NOTHING will change!!!
DeleteAnother big crowd predicted for Friday night, 2,000 +. Awesome, go Vipers!

ReplyDeleteThe REAL fans ARE standing behind the team and supporting it. Losing seasons happen, it just takes maturity and patience to handle them.

Delete‘Voice’ displeasure…yet, you go by ‘anonymous’. Irony, no?
DeleteWith a current 30.77 Win % for the Vipers, how do they compare to other Vernon Teams
ReplyDeleteBelow are the only Vernon teams that have worse records....
1981-82 Lakers, 22.34%
1980-81 Lakers, 14.29%
1977-78 Vikings, 15.15%
1966-67 Blades, 15%
1963-64 Blades, 20.59%
1962-63 Blades, 29.03%
1961-62 Canadians, 25.86%
What have all the above teams have in common, not sure but, all the coaches only lasted one season except for Odie Lowe of the 66-67 Blades.
some of those coachs did not last a full season
DeleteGood luck recruiting next summer.
