Steel is in his first season as an Assistant Coach with the Merritt Centennials. The Centennials are in there first season in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League after leaving the BCHL after the 2023-24 season. The Kootenay International Junior Hockey League announced in late March that an expansion franchise has been awarded to Merritt. The White Rock Centennials moved to Merritt in 1973.
Steel played three seasons at Brown University from 2013-2016 before leaving school and signing his first professional contract in 2016 with the Southern Professional Hockey League Huntsville Havoc. Steel played one season with the Havoc before retiring from professional hockey after the 2016-17 season. Steel was the Merritt Centennials goaltending coach with the 2022-23 Merritt Centennials.
Steel attended the Vernon Vipers Spring Camp in 2008 and Training Camps in 2009 & 2010, was released after playing a few exhibition games in 2010. Steel signed with the Merritt Centennials in September 2010 playing three seasons in Merritt from 2010-2013 before committing to Brown University for the 2013-14 season.
The Merritt Centennials Board Of Directors unanimously voted to cease operations(fold) after the BCHL playoffs of 2024 citing a number of issues with continuing in the BCHL.
ReplyDeleteA NEW franchise was given to Merritt to play in the KIJHL, the new owners adopted the name Merritt Centennials for continuity for the City. The former Board gave the NEW franchise permission to retain all stats of the OLD franchise.
