Cyclones Add Former Vipers Fowlie, Walchuk & Coughlin To Teams Protected List:

The ECHL announced their Protected Lists as submitted by each of its member teams. The Cincinnati Cyclones have fifteen players listed on their protected list three of those fifteen players are former Vernon Vipers forward Cody Fowlie, former Vernon Vipers forward Dylan Walchuk & former Vernon Vipers defenceman Johnny Coughlin.

Cody Fowlie played last year in Romania with the ASC Corona Braşov Wolves. The Wolves signed Fowlie June 10th 2019. In 60 games last season Fowlie collected (37-goals-31-assists-68-points). The ASC Corona Braşov were founded in 2007 as Sport Club Municipal Fenestela 68, is an ice hockey team in Braşov, Romania.

Fowlie spent five years playing at the University of Regina before signing his professional contract with the ECHL Jacksonville IceMen February 15 2018. Fowlie spent two seasons in Jacksonville before signing with the ASC Corona Braşov Wolves. The Icemen traded Fowlie to Cincinnati September 20th 2019. Fowlie never played a game with the Cyclones, spent the 2019-20 season in Romania with the Wolves.

Fowlie signed with the Vipers October 16th 2012 played three games before leaving Vernon and signing with the Western Hockey League Kelowna Rockets October 22nd 2012. In three games with the Vipers Fowlie recorded (1-goal-1-assist-2-points).

Dylan Walchuk played last season with KRS-ORG Beijing. HC Kunlun Red Star Heilongjiang Chinese: 黑龙江昆仑鸿星; pinyin: Heilongjiang Kūnlún Hóngxīng is a Chinese ice hockey club based in Harbin, China and joined the Supreme Hockey League (VHL). In 51 games last year Walchuk collected (6-goals-8-assists-14-points).

After playing four years at the University of Calgary (2013-2017), Walchuk played his first professional season with the Odense Bulldogs (2017-18). The Bulldogs are a professional ice hockey team based in Odense, Denmark. They currently are part of the best Danish league Metal Ligaen, and they are furthermore the only hockey team from Funen. Walchuk spent 2018-19 playing with three different teams in two different leagues. Walchuk started the 2018-19 season with KRS-ORG Beijing. HC Kunlun Red Star Heilongjiang Chinese left after only playing in three games before signing with the ECHL Jacksonville Icemen October 9 2018. The Icemen traded Walchuk to the Adirondack Thunder December 20 2018. The Thunder traded Walchuk to Cincinnati June 17th 2019.

Walchuk played parts of three seasons in Vernon (2009-2012). Walchuk left the Vipers after the 2010-11 season for the University of Northern Michigan before returning to the Vipers in December of 2011 after playing in just 19 games with the Wolverines.  In his second stint with the Vipers Walchuk left Vernon after playing in just six games. Walchuk left the Vipers on January 10th 2012 for the Western Hockey League Spokane Cheifs where he would finish his junior hockey career (2012-2013).  In 117 games with the Vipers Walchuk collected (44-goals-65-assists-109-points).

Johnny Coughlin started last season with the ECHL Maine Mariners, was entering his second season with the Mariners was traded to Norfolk October 16th 2019. After playing in only nine games with the Admirals, Coughlin was traded to Cincinnati February 20th 2020. Coughlin had two goals in nine games with the Cyclones before the ECHL season was cancelled due to COVID-19.

After four years at the College of the Holy Cross Coughlin signed his first professional contract with the ECHL Maine Mariners March 15th 2019.

Coughlin played one season in Vernon, playing in 55 games with the 2014-15 Vipers, collecting (3-goals-15-assists-18-points).

Cincinnati, OH- The Cincinnati Cyclones, in conjunction with the ECHL, have announced their 2020 Protected List. The full 15-man list can be found below.

2020 Cincinnati Cyclones Protected List:

Forwards (11)Cody Fowlie, Brendan Harms, Ben Holmstrom, Philippe Hudon, Ben Johnson, Cody Milan, Nate Mitton, Jesse Schultz,  Brady Vail, Justin Vaive, Dylan Walchuk

Defensemen (3)Johnny Coughlin, Andrew DeBrincat, Connor Schmidt,

Goaltender (1) - Ty Rimmer

Per ECHL rules, teams are allowed to protect as many players as they wish, provided the players protected meet the guidelines as defined in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between the ECHL and the Professional Hockey Players’ Association (PHPA) which state that teams shall retain the rights to each player that:

1. Signed an Standard Player Contract (SPC) in 2019-20 with the team, and has not been traded or released, OR

2. Signed an SPC in 2019-20, and was recalled to the NHL/AHL or an IIHF team, and has not been traded or released, OR

3. Had received a Qualifying Offer last summer for the current season, DID NOT sign an SPC, and has not been traded or released, OR

4. Has been suspended by the team or League, and has not been traded or released, OR

5. Signed an SPC on or after the first day of the 2019-2020 regular season, then subsequently signed an NHL/AHL contract, and has not been traded or released, OR

6. Has executed the ECHL retirement form, and has not been traded or released.

This is the first major date of the off-season for ECHL teams. Next up will be June 12 when teams must complete all Future Consideration trades by 3 p.m. ET. Finally, teams must submit their Season-Ending Roster by 3 p.m. ET on June 15. Season-ending rosters may include up to 20 players, and cannot include any players who did not sign an ECHL contract in 2019-2020.
