After the Buzzer – Vipers Fall To Warriors

    February 21, 2020

Vernon, BC: The Vipers had two shorthanded goals, but their comeback was a bit short as they fell to the West Kelowna Warriors by a 6-4 score.

The Vipers jumped out to an early lead and did so while shorthanded as Connor Sleeth sprung Ben Helgeson away on a breakaway and he was able to deke out Johnny Derrick for his 10th goal of the season to make it 1-0. The Warriors responded on a bit of a fortunate bounce a puck floated from behind the net and onto the tape of Ryan Upson to make it 1-1. The Vipers had a fortunate bounce of their own minutes later as a pass from Matt Kowalski hit a skate and went to Ryan Shostak who was able to wire home his 8th of the season to make it 2-1 after 1 period.

The Vipers had a ton of opportunities in the period putting 14 shots at the Warriors net, but Johnny Derrick was stellar turning them aside. Reilly Herbst wasn’t to be outdone making the save of the period with his team shorthanded. The Warriors evened the game up late in the period as John Evans was set up in front of the net to make it 2-2. While on a powerplay Evans would strike again as a shot was blocked but rolled right to him at the side of the net to make it 3-2 in the final minute.

The Vipers evened the game up early in the period as Max Bulawka jumped on a loose puck to make it 3-3 in the first minute. The Vipers were then forced into a shorthanded situation for 4 minutes and killed it off to keep the game tied. The Warriors regained their lead as Levi Stauber snapped home his 10th of the season to make it 4-2 with 7 minutes left. Elan Barlevwise increased the Warrior lead with his 4th of the season 3 minutes later to make it 5-3. With the goalie pulled and shorthanded the Vipers made it a 1 goal game as Dawson Holt scored his 22nd of the season with just over 2 minutes left. The Vipers would get the goalie pulled, but couldn’t execute as John Evans hit the empty net to seal it 6-4.

The Vipers will look to finish the regular season on the right note as they travel to West Kelowna on Saturday.

RECAP: WARRIORS SNAP LOSING STREAK WITH 6-4 WIN OVER VIPERS

    February 21, 2020

VERNON, B.C. – The West Kelowna Warriors snap their six game losing streak after winning 6-4 over the Vernon Vipers Friday night.

It was a nightmare start for the Warriors with forward Tyler Cristall taking a dangerous hit from Vipers Landon Fuller forcing Cristall to leave the game with a shoulder injury. The Warriors would immediately go on the powerplay but it was the Vipers that would get a shorthanded goal after Ben Helgeson sprung loose on a breakaway beating Johnny Derrick to make it 1-0 Vipers. The Warriors needed anything to get some momentum back and got a freak goal minutes later. After AP call up Brennan Nelson was able to keep the puck moving in the Vipers zone he would attempt to fire the puck around the boards, but the puck would go off a Vipers stick and bounce directly to the stick of Ryan Upson and in to tie it up at one. The Vipers would find a way to regain the lead after Ryan Shostak was able to capitalize off a Johnny Derrick rebound to make it 2-1 Vipers after one period of play.

The Warriors got news that Tyler Cristall would not return to the game in the second which meant Ryan Upson would take his place on the top line, and Upson didn’t disappoint. With under five minutes remaining in the second, Upson would fire a shot towards Reilly Herbst, the shot would go off a Vipers player and right to the stick of John Evans and in to tie the game up at two. With under a minute remaining the Warriors would go on a powerplay and it would be Evans once again to give the Warriors their first lead of the game with a top corner wrist shot making it 3-2 Warriors heading into the dressing room.

The Vipers came out strong in the third getting on the board only 30 seconds in with former Warrior Max Bulawka scoring his first goal against his former club to tie it up at three. The Warriors would later capitalize on their chances with Drew Vieten going coast to coast and finding Levi Stauber scoring his 10th of the season to restore the lead for the Warriors making it 4-3. The Warriors were not done there. Drew Vieten would steal the puck away from Landon Fuller and feed Elan Bar Lev Wise and the former Viper extended the Warriors lead making it 5-3. The insurance goal proved to be the game winner after the Vipers Dawson Holt made it interesting cutting the lead to make it 5-4, but John Evans would tally an empty net goal giving him his first career BCHL hatrick ending the game with a Warriors 6-4 victory.

Final shots on goal: 28-24 in favour of the Vipers.

  3. Glen should rename the Vipers "The Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight"! He should edit some film footage and make a MOVIE, it would be the comedy hit of the year, with him in the lead role, With his stooge McKee as supporting bad actor! Oh well it will be soon over!

  4. What a disappointing loss in front of the 3rd largest crowd of the year last night. The Vipers had an opportunity to show the fans that yes they could be a strong playoff team but as usual terrible defense, the inability to put the puck in the net especially in the second period and poor coaching decisions cost them another win. The so called fourth line was disastrous all night getting stuck in their own end time after time and then finally giving up a goal. Hunter Donohoe had 3 assists to help the Warriors. Graham Turnbull said on the post game show that its hard to score in the BCHL but but the Warriors proved that wrong with 3 goals on 4 shots in the third. I wonder if the team has given up on the coaching staff? Puppet 1 and 2 show no emotion at all behind the bench and Jason Mckee seemed to be the only disappointed person with his very short and abrupt post game comments. I wonder who will show up in Kelowna on Saturday night

  5. The irony is that the Vipers could still finish third in the Interior if they win their final game on Saturday night in West Kelowna and Wenatchee ties or loses in Penticton. And with only one game left, a loss means they could fall as far as fifth, depending on what Salmon Arm does in their final game.

  6. I heard this at the game last night from a volunteer STAFFER. One of the players for the warriors said that one of the big reasons he decided not to play for the vernon vipers was because Mark Ferner would not have been his coach and that he had heard things about our new coach he was not pleased to hear. The warrriors player would not say what it was. So maybe our coaches , coaching style is just different and players are not adjusting. Anyway playoffs are just around the corner and will see what the future holds , for the coaching staff, players and owners. HAVE A NICE DAY. GO,VIPERS,GO.

  7. The Warriors deserve full credit for this win. They are a scrappy group that never quits. While they don't have a lot of stars, they do play well as a team and always try to outwork their opposition. Last night I thought they did that.

The Vipers seemed to be playing well until late in the second when an ill advised pass by Junior B (or should I say Junior G) was intercepted and ended up in the back of our net, evening the score at two. From then on Kelowna seemed to surge and we seemed to struggle. The safest pass is always up the boards, not through the middle of the ice (Hockey 101).

McKee sounded frustrated after the game but he should look in the mirror. He selected these players, instituted his system & had more than enough opportunity to make changes if he was not happy with what he saw. This team does not look at all ready to start a playoff run.
