ReplyDeleteAfter the Buzzer – Vipers Rally Late and Strike in Shootout
October 27, 2019
Port Alberni, BC: Cam MacDonald scored in the final minute of regulation and again in the shootout as the Vernon Vipers pushed their win streak to 7 games following a 4-3 shootout win over the Alberni Valley Bulldogs.
The Vipers wanted to get out to a good start, despite doing so, they found themselves behind in the first couple of minutes as Austin Spiridakis scored his 7th goal of the season to make it 1-0. The Vipers pushed the pace and directed 19 shots at the Alberni Valley goal in the period. Luke Pearson was challenged many times on quality opportunities. The only one to get by him was a centering pass from Brett Fudger that was tapped home by Dawson Holt to make it 1-1 late in the period.
In the second, the Vipers took their first lead of the night as Connor Marritt deflected home a Cam MacDonald shot to make it 2-1. That lead was shortlived as Josh Zary equalized on the powerplay for his 3rd of the season. Again the Vipers continued to build and keep the Bulldogs on their heels. The Vipers allowed just 5 shots on goal in the period thanks in large part to a commitment to blocking shots and using active sticks. The frame would end 2-2.
In the third it was a bit more back and forth with the Vipers having the edge in quality scoring chances. Again, Luke Pearson was stellar keeping the game tied. Not to be outdone, AP goaltender Cole Steinke made a handful of good saves in the period. Alberni took their second lead of the night late in regulation as Austin Spiridakis was set on a 2 on 1 and he made no mistake to make it 3-2. With the goaltender pulled, the Vipers drew even as Christian Felton set up Cam MacDonald in front of the net with just under 90 seconds left in regulation.
Overtime would solve nothing with just one shot put up from the Vipers.
The shootout was a different story as the goalies were at the mercy of the shooters. First up for Alberni was Dawson Tritt and he ripped home a goal. Dawson Holt was next for Vernon and was stopped. Tommy Bannister was then stopped by Steinke. Connor Marritt buried his chance and it was even at 1 after 2 rounds. In the third round Ryan Doolin would snipe one home, followed by a goal from Cam MacDonald and it was even at 2 after 3 rounds. Mitch Deelstra struck for one only to be followed up by a goal from Kowalski making it 3-3 after 4 rounds. In the fifth round, Jackson Doucet was stopped and Nick Kent would win it for the Vipers with a hot shot to the glove side giving his team the 4-3 win.
The Vipers will finish up the weekend with a matinee in Nanaimo at 2pm from the Frank Crane Arena
I watched tonight's Vipers/Bulldogs game on the computer. Overall it was the Vipers who were the better team and outplayed the Bulldogs most of the night. It didn't look good early after Alberni Valley opened the scoring just 2:10 into the hockey game. The Vipers outshot the Dogs 19-6 in the opening frame, but the game was tied 1-1. Vernon had lots of quality chances but had troubles beating Luke Pearson who was solid in goal for Alberni Valley. The Snakes carried most of the play, had a lot of offensive zone time but ran into a hot goaltender. I really liked the looks of Colby Feist, Ben Helgeson, Brett Fudger, Elan Bar-Lev-Wise, Matt Kowalski, Caller Jackson, Cameron MacDonald and Ryan Shostak. It didn't look good for Vernon after the hometown Bulldogs took a 3-2 lead with about three minutes left. Vernon looked to be going on a late power play but Brendan Kim took a dump penalty after the play, to even things up, costing his team a chance with the man advantage. With the goaltender pulled, Cameron MacDonald ties the game with 1:28 remaining to force overtime. The Vipers outplayed Alberni Valley in OT had several good looks/quality chances couldn't solve Luke Pearson. The Bulldogs were one save away from winning there eighth straight, allow Cameron MacDonald to tie the shootout on the Vipers final shot, before Nicholas Kent's shootout winner. The Vipers power play struggles once again. Does anyone know how long Ben Sanderson is out of the lineup? This kid was injured last year for a lengthy period of time, cant seem to stay healthy. I was very surprised the Vipers went with rookie/AP goaltender Cole Steinke between the pipes facing a Alberni Valley Bulldogs team that has been playing red hot and one of the hottest teams in the league of late. Steinke didn't see a lot of rubber, looked good at times but also looked a little shaky at times. I noticed he goes down on almost every shot. In a game where the Snakes outplayed there opponents this was a game, they needed to win. I would have hated to see the Vipers lose in a game where they were by far the better team and outshot the Bulldogs 47-21. Heading into tonight the Vipers knew they would be in tough, vs a red hot Alberni Valley Bulldogs team. yet Vernon finds a way to tie the game late before coming away with the win in the shootout.
ReplyDeleteThe Bulldogs didn't impress me tonight, were outplayed and out chanced most of the entire hockey game. Alberni Valley played a lot of the night in there own end and were chasing Vernon. The Bulldogs struggled to gain any kind of traction/zone time for lengthy periods of time. The Dogs had troubles getting pucks to the net and creating/generating any kind of opportunities. Alberni Valley did have a few shifts now and again where they had the Vipers back on there heels, but overall saw a lot of the play in there own end. If it wasn't for Luke Pearson, the game may have been over after the 1st period. Pearson kept his team in the game and was the only reason why the Bulldogs got a point tonight.
This was a very exciting yet nerve racking game. The Vipers have won seven straight and playing there best hockey of the season. About two and a half weeks ago, several Viper fans thought the sky was falling. Some fans wanted you fired! I would like to give a huge pat on the back to the Vipers coaching staff for the job they have done the past few weeks. Keep up the good work!
The Vipers will finish the weekend tomorrow afternoon in Nanaimo vs the 1st place Clippers.
Go Vipers Go!
