The University of New Hampshire Wildcats have named former Vernon Vipers defenceman Dylan Chanter captain for this coming season.Chanter will be entering his fourth season at the University of New Hampshire played parts of one season in Vernon (2013-14) after acquiring his rights from the Merritt Centennials on January 3rd 2014 for Jason Bird & future considerations (Logan Mick). Chanter went pointless in 19 games with the Vipers. In 37 games last season Chanter collected (1-goal-2-assists-3-points).

Kelleher Named MVP; Chanter Named Captain at Annual Awards Banquet

DURHAM, N.H. – Senior forward Tyler Kelleher (Longmeadow, Mass.) of the University of New Hampshire men's hockey team was given the Roger A. LeClerc Award at the team's Most Valuable Player at the annual awards banquet. Saturday's event was held at the Huddleston Hall Ballroom on the campus of UNH.
Junior defenseman Dylan Chanter (Armstrong, British Columbia) was named the program's 114th captain for the 2017-18 season. Junior netminder Danny Tirone (Trumbull, Conn.) was named the assistant captain.
Kelleher also earned the Guy Smith Award at the best forward on the Wildcats this season and was named the Frank "The Fan" Halbert Fan Favorite award winner. Kelleher capped off his stellar Wildcat career with a 63-point season on 24 goals and a nation-leading 39 assists. He was one of three skaters to lead the nation in points. He was also named a CCM/AHCA Division I Second Team East All-American, a Hockey East First Team All-Star, a New England Division I All-Star, the Hockey East Scoring Champion, a winner of the Army ROTC Three Stars Award and a Hobey Baker Memorial Award Top-10 Finalist. He ended his collegiate career tied for 16th all-time in program history with 167 points on 57 goals and 110 assists.
Along with being named captain, Chanter was the recipient of the A. Barr "Whoop" Snively Citizenship and Service Award. Chanter finished with three points this season with his first collegiate goal and two assists. His goal came in a 4-4 tie at Boston University on Feb. 17.
Tirone was voted by the coaching staff to be the winner of the Charles E. Holt Coaches Award. It is given to the player that makes large contributions to the team, both on and off the ice. He started all 38 games he played between the pipes and tallied a record of 15-18-5 with a goals against average of 2.99 and a save percentage of .910. He secured three shutouts on the year and tallied an assist at Merrimack College in the Hockey East Opening Round (March 4). He was also named the Hockey East Player of the Week on March 6.
Senior blueliner Matias Cleland (Longmont, Colo.) earned the Rod Langway Best Defenseman Award. The captain finished the season tied for third in the nation in points among defensemen (36) and tied for first in the league after his three goal and 33 assist performance. Cleland started all 40 games played this season and blocked a total of 91 shots. He was named a Hockey East Honorable Mention All-Star and the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week on Jan. 9. He finished as the top-scoring defenseman in Hockey East.
The Robert A. Kullen Award, as selected by the coaching staff, was bestowed upon junior defenseman Cameron Marks (North Vancouver, British Columbia). It was previously known as the Unsung Hero Award, however it was renamed in 1991 in memory of the late UNH coach. Along with his defensive partner Cleland, Marks started every game this season and was second in the conference in blocked shots with 94. He tallied 12 points on one goal and 11 assists.
The Most Improved Player Award was given to junior forward Jason Salvaggio (Hanson, Mass.). Salvaggio was also given the Paul Hines Award for as New England's Most Improved Player. The Massachusetts native recorded 36 points on 23 goals and 13 assists. Coming into the 2016-17 season, he had just eight points on three goals and five assists through his first two years. Three of his goals this season were game winners while he had four games scoring two goals. He finished the season tied for fourth in Hockey East in goals and fifth in shots on goal with 143.
Sophomore Chris Miller (Windham, N.H.) received a pair of awards, the Warren R. Brown Memorial Award as well as the SCO Nate Hardy Ironman Award. The Warren R. Brown Memorial Award is given to the best defensive forward. Miller played in 38 of 40 games on the year and tallied a goal with five assists. The Ironman Award is earned by the student-athlete who excels in the weight room through a 15-event competition during dry-land training in the fall. The Award was named in honor of Nate Hardy, a Navy SEAL who was tragically killed in action in Iraq in early February 2008.
The final award, the Sid Knight Award, was garnered by freshman goalie Joe Lazzaro (Hampstead, N.H.). The award is given to the student-athlete that boasts the highest grade point average over the year. Lazzaro earned a mark of 3.91 in his field of electrical engineering.
