Bears Sign Viper Alumni Weinstein:

The American Hockey League (AHL) Hershey Bears have signed former Vernon Vipers defenceman Steve Weinstein.

After four seasons at Bentley University (2011-2015) Weinstein has spent the past two seasons playing in the American Hockey League & East Coast Hockey League with four different teams. Weinstein spent the 2015-16 season with the East Coast Hockey League Cincinnati Cyclones and the American Hockey League Lake Erie Monsters. This season Weinstein has played with the East Coast Hockey League South Carolina Stingrays.

Weinstein played three seasons in Vernon (2008-2011) in 153 regular season games with the Vipers collected (10-goals-49-assists-59-points).

01/19/2017 - (Hershey, PA- January 19, 2017)-The Hershey Bears have signed defenseman Steve Weinstein to a professional tryout agreement, Vice President of Hockey Operations Bryan Helmer announced today.

Weinstein, 26, has appeared in 32 games this season with Hershey’s ECHL affiliate, the South Carolina Stingrays. The native of Los Angeles, California is South Carolina’s leading defensive scorer, collecting 19 points (three goals, 16 assists) to go along with a plus/minus rating of +15. The second-year pro was acquired by Stingrays on June 3, 2016 from the ECHL’s Cincinnati Cyclones. During his rookie season with Cincinnati, Weinstein posted 22 points (three goals, 19 assists) in 52 games.

The 5-foot-10, 175-pound defender has skated in seven career AHL games, posting two assists. He played three contests with the Springfield Falcons in 2014-15, and dressed for four games with Lake Erie last season.

Weinstein played four seasons of collegiate hockey at Bentley College, skating in 145 games and registering 105 points (14 goals, 91 assists). He served as an alternate captain during his senior season, and was named the Atlantic Hockey Association's (AHA) Best Defenseman during the 2014-15 campaign. Prior to his time in the NCAA, Weinstein helped the Vernon Vipers of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) to three straight championships.

Hershey also announced that defenseman Colby Williams will be away from the team this weekend on personal leave. He will return to the club next week.

Hershey hits the road to battle Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Saturday evening at 7:05 p.m. The game may be heard on the Bears Radio Network. On Sunday, Hershey hosts Lehigh Valley at 5 p.m. for Hometown Heroes Night and Dietz & Watson Dollar Dog Night.
