TAMPA — It has gone from bad to worse for Andrew Hammond.

Trying to get his career back on track after being sent to the club’s AHL affiliate in Binghamton last month when goaltender Craig Anderson returned from his personal leave, Hammond suffered a tear in his right labrum, he will require surgery and his season is over.

Hammond, 29, who took the club on a remarkable 20-1-2 run to lead the Senators to the playoffs in 2015, complained of some pain playing 10 days ago with Binghamton and was sent for further testing.

“This surgery will keep (Hammond) out for the remainder of the season and our doctors are estimating that his rehabilitation will allow him to begin skating in approximately 12 weeks,” GM Pierre Dorion said Monday.

This has been a terrible season for Hammond, who has another year left at $1.35 million so the Senators will have to decide at the end of the season they’re going to buy him out of the final year of his deal.

He suffered a groin injury on Oct. 30 against the Calgary Flames then he suffered high-ankle sprain on Dec. 18 vs. the New York Islanders. Both injuries kept him out for an extended period and Mike Condon has emerged as the backup to Craig Anderson.

“It’s one of those years for (Hammond). I feel bad. I really do,” coach Guy Boucher said Monday night. “It’s one of those nightmare years. I’m sure he’ll bounce back.”
