BCHL News & Trades:

I found these press releases off team websites, twitter accounts, blogs or online. All Vipers news-trades are posted on this blog as soon as released-announced.

BCHL News & Trades:

Powell River-Coquitlam Trade:

The Powell River Kings have transferred the CJHL playing rights to Brandon Kennedy(97)(D) to the Coquitlam Express in exchange for future considerations.

Merritt-Cowichan Trade:

The Merritt Centennials announced today that 18-year-old defenceman Marshall Skapski has been traded to the Cowichan Valley Capitals for future considerations. “We’d like to thank Marshall for his contributions to our organization,” said Cents GM and Head Coach Joe Martin. “We wish him all the best in Cowichan and for the remainder of his hockey career.” Skapski played 28 career games in Merritt, all this season, posting four points (one goal, three assists) and 21 penalty minutes. The Abbotsford native was acquired by the Centennials from the Alberni Valley Bulldogs this past April.

Campese Leaves Warriors For Western Hockey League:

Red Deer Rebels GM/head coach Brent Sutter is confident that Matt Campese will be more than a spare part with the team. Sutter added Campese to the Rebels roster Thursday and also recalled defenceman Jacob Herauf from the midget AAA Sherwood Park Kings. Campese, a 19-year-old forward, was released by the Kamloops Blazers in late September and was playing with the West Kelowna Warriors of the junior A BCHL when Sutter secured his WHL rights. Sutter considered making the move earlier in the season. “We discussed it a while back and yet I just wanted to give it some time to see where our team is at, what our depth is like,” he said. Sutter noted that Campese will serve as an insurance policy prior to and following the Christmas break with Michael Spacek and possibly team captain Adam Musil playing for the Czech Republic in the worlds juniors. “We just thought that he’s a guy we can bring in, is cost effective and has experience in the league — he’s been in the league since he was 16 years old,” said the Rebels boss. Campese, a five-foot-10, 180-pound winger, suited up with the Victoria Royals for one game as a 16-year-old and played 14 games with the club the following season (2014-15) before being dealt to the Kamloops Blazers. He contributed two goals and three points in 35 games split between Victoria and Kamloops that season and last winter recorded eight goals and 12 points in 56 games with the Blazers. He garnered a single assist in two games this fall before being released. He had more offensive success in West Kelowna, putting up 17 points (6g,11a) in 15 games. Sutter doesn’t expect him to average a point per game at the major junior level but sees the Prince Albert product — and the son of former WHL general manager and coach and current Vegas Golden Knights scout Bruno Campese — as a serviceable player. “We decided to bring him in and maybe re-energize him a bit,” said Sutter. “At the same time we’re adding more experience to our lineup and more depth to our team. “He’s a five-10 player whose skating is average and who comes from a great family. He’s got some skills, he’s going to work and he’s smart. He can add to our third and fourth lines.” Herauf, meanwhile, has been periodically recalled from the Kings this fall and will stay with the Rebels through the remainder of the season as an eighth defender. “With our schedule after Christmas, we have one time when we have four to five days off between games,” said Sutter. “Because of that I wasn’t comfortable with going with seven defencemen. “He allows us to have eight defencemen here and we know from the past, at certain times of the season, that we’re going to need that. He’s only 16 but he’s a good player and he was our first-round pick (in the 2015 WHL bantam draft).” Herauf can also fill in up front if necessary, Sutter noted.

Powell River-Melfort Trade:

The Powell River Kings have transferred the CJHL playing rights to Lucas Fraulin(98)(F) to the Melfort Mustangs of the SJHL in exchange for future considerations.

Penticton Vees Sign Brydon:

The Penticton Vees Jr. A Hockey Club has signed 1998-born defenceman Greg Brydon, the team announced Tuesday. He’s a big kid who has a great work ethic,” said President, General Manager and Head Coach Fred Harbinson. “He’s got experience at this level and we’re very familiar with him, as he was an affiliate for us in the past two seasons and attended a couple of our camps.” Brydon, 18, started the season with the Powell River Kings, playing in 18 games, picking up one assist to go along with 23 penalty-minutes. The Penticton native was briefly with the Campbell River Storm of the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League before landing in Penticton, and picked up a goal in his Storm debut over the weekend. Prior to breaking into the BCHL, Brydon spent the past three years at the Okanagan Hockey Academy (OHA) next door. Last season, the 6’1, 190-pound rear-guard picked up four goals and 14 points in 23 games with the OHA Prep Red team in the Canadian Sport School Hockey League. In a corresponding move, the Vees have played defenceman Gabe Bast (96) on the Injured Reserve. Bast had a goal and two points this season as injuries limited him to just six games. Brydon, who will wear number 43, will make his Vees debut tomorrow night when his hometown team hosts the Vernon Vipers at the SOEC.

Surrey-West Kelowna Trade:

The West Kelowna Warriors Junior ‘A’ Hockey Club has acquired forward Logan Mostat (’97) and future considerations from the Surrey Eagles in exchange for goaltender Keelan Williams (’96). Mostat, 19, is in his second season with the Eagles with 11 goals and 24 points in31 games so far in the 2016/17 season to go along with 21 penalty minutes. Over his BCHL career with Surrey and affiliating with the Salmon Arm Silverbacks, Mostat has played in 59 games with 15 goals and 33 points plus 33 penalty minutes. The Salmon Arm, BC native was signed midway through the 2015/16 season by the Eagles after a successful run in the KIJHL, earning 41 goals and 76 points in 121 games in Junior ‘B’ also adding 266 penalty minutes in that span with the North Okanagan Knights and the Chase Heat. “With three goaltenders, we had to make a move,” stated Warriors general manager and head coach Rylan Ferster, “Getting an offensive 19-year-old with a year and half of junior hockey left made good sense.” Williams, 20, has yet to play a game this season while battling back from an injury and spending time on the injured reserve. In 22 games played during the regular season last year, Williams compiled a 13-6 record with a 3.38 GAA and a .893 SV% after being signed midway through the season after his release from the Western Hockey League. The Calgary, Alberta native played a key part in the Warriors championship run, playing in 13 games split between the BCHL playoffs, Western Canada Cup and the Royal Bank Cup. Williams earned a 2.27 GAA and an impressive .931 SV% in relief of injured goaltender Matthew Greenfield. The Warriors would like to thank Keelan for his time and contributions to the Warriors and the city of West Kelowna and would like to wish him all the best in his future endeavors in Surrey. The Warriors would also like to welcome Logan to the city of West Kelowna.

Vees TV:

In this week's edition of Vees' View with Coach Harbinson, Penticton Vees head coach Fred Harbinson talks about last week's redemption in Powell River, where they won three to one against the Kings. That followed the team's first two-straight losses this season, first in Trail against the Smoke Eaters last Wednesday with a five to three finish. The Vees then lost four to three at home against the Salmon Arm Silverbacks. The Vees have been seeing damage at the blue line, with numerous injured defencemen, which Harbinson says has made the team a sort of piecemeal roster for the time being. Finally, Harbinson tell us about the newest addition to the team: Greg Brydon.

Prince George-Listowel Trade:

The Prince George Spruce Kings would like to announce that they have traded the playing rights to forward Jamie Huber back to his previous team, the Listowel Cyclones of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League (GOJHL), in exchange for future considerations. “Jamie approached the coaching staff recently and asked for a move closer to home. He thanked the coaches for everything and noted that he enjoyed every aspect of being a Spruce King and the city of Prince George but at this time it was important for him to play closer to home. Jamie is a great kid and was a big part of our team but at the end of the day there are things in life that are more important than the game of hockey, and certainly family is one of those things. We would like to thank Jamie for his time as a Spruce King and wish him all the best in his future endeavors” said Spruce Kings General Manager Mike Hawes.

Howse Steps Down From Spruce Kings:

Howse, who worked with the Kings first as a scout and then as an assistant coach, has left the team for family reasons. An alum of the program, Howse was brought in this offseason after leading the Midget Tier 1 Cougars to an incredible season capped off by a Provincial title. No replacement has been named by the Spruce Kings.

The Trail Smoke Eater organization welcomes Korbyn to the Smoke Eaters and to Trail.
