What's the seating capacity in the Merritt arena? It looks tiny!
ReplyDeleteGo Vipers!
Should be a good a game
The Nicola Valley Memorial Arena was founded in 1985 and holds 1000 people according to Wikipedia. I thought it held 1,300. It is tiny and one of the smallest-coldest rinks in the league.
ReplyDeleteIve seen a handful of Vipers games in Merritt and it is pretty small. If the building has a good size crowd, it has a great atmosphere with one of the loudest goal horns in the league. The arena has an old horn they use that was used in World War 1 or 2 Ive heard. They only have three rows of seating. The ice surface is tiny (85 x 187) and in the middle of winter, its pretty cold inside. People-fans call it "The Fridge" for a reason.
Evan Hammond (Alberni Valley Bulldogs broadcaster) has a video he took back in 2009 when the Bulldogs were in Merritt.

Here is another video that gives a decent look of the inside,

Hope this helps
Thanks diehard! I appreciate the in-depth response!
ReplyDeleteIf Merrit only has the one rink....then I used to play in it when I was a kid back in the late 80's early nineties. I remember it being cold back then as well. There must have been some upgrades at some point because I remember it being a dump of an arena way back then. Lol!
Your welcome! I'm not sure if there is more then one arena in Merritt. They did several major renovations at the Nicola Valley Memorial Arena I'm guessing 10-15 years ago? I cant remember... They added the theatre style seating like most modern hockey arenas these days, they added in heaters above the seating, I think they upgraded the broadcasters booth and then last year or the previous season added a new score clock.
