Exhibition: EC Red Bull Salzburg 6 Vernon 4

For anyone who could not attend or watch tonight’s Vipers game here are my thoughts and views from tonight’s game. You may agree or disagree but we all have our own view and opinion on any game we watch. This is my opinion and my thoughts on how I saw tonight’s game. I try to be unbiased and give a fare recap on both sides. Thanks for stopping by & visiting my blog.

I was at tonight's Vipers-EC Red Bull Salsburg Exhibition game as EX Red Bull Salzburg defeated Vernon 6-4 in front of 1,277 fans at Kal Tire Place.

Starting Goaltenders:

Vernon: Brendan Barry
Ec Red Bull Salzburg: Wouter Peeters

1st Period: Just fourty five seconds into the game, Brett Stapley setup Liam Finlay who somehow missed a wide open net, on a great opportunity to open the scoring. Philipp Lindner would open the scoring on a long shot from just inside the Viper blueline beat Brendan Barry on EC Red Bull Salzburg's first shot of the night, giving EC Red Bull Salzburg a 1-0 lead at 2:19 Daniel Wachter & #16 (not listed on the lineup sheet) collected the assists. Just over two minutes later Paul Sztatecsny would beat Barry on EC Red Bull Salzburg's second shot giving EC Red Bull Salzburg a 2-0 lead at 4:24 Johaness Huss and Patrik Kittinger picked up the assists. EC Red Bull Salzburg carried the better of the play and were the better team early but other then the two goals didn't generate much for scoring opportunities. Before the halfway mark Maximilian Egger with some nice stick work in tight setup Florian Baltram in front who couldn't beat Brendan Barry in close on some nice stick work by EC Red Bull Salzburg. Shortly after Charley Michalowski with a nice move, was stopped by Wouter Peeters in close who come up with a huge save keeping this a two goal game. Vernon with not a lot of jump early, couldn't seem to get much going. In the second half Liam Finlay setup Brett Stapley at the side of the net, who couldn't bang home the loose puck before a goal mouth scramble, where Peeters down and out was able to recover and smoother the loose puck for a whistle on a great chance in close. Bo Pellah took a hit along the side boards, went hard into the wall didn't get up, as the play was blown down before Pellah was looked at by the team trainer. Pellah was very slow getting up, wasn't putting a lot of pressure on one leg-skate before going to the Viper bench, but stayed in the game. Pellah would miss the next few shifts, was on the bench before returning to the ice. The Vipers finally seemed to get their legs going in the final five minutes and slowly started to come on late to finish the period. Brett Stapley setup Ben Butcher who got the Vipers on the board at 16:39 cutting the EC Red Bull Salzburg lead to 2-1. Stapley and Liam Finlay with the helpers. Less then two minutes later after some good pressure by the Vipers, Steven Jandric with a wicked snap shot beat Wouter Peeters tying the game 2-2 at 18:15 Colton McCarthy with the lone assist. The Vipers who were outshot 6-5 at one point went a good five to six minutes without a single shot were now outshooting EC Red Bull Salzburg 9-6. It was tied 2-2 after 20 minutes of play. Liam Finlay somehow missed a wide open net off the opening faceoff before EC Red Bull Salzburg jumped out to a quick two goal lead just over four minutes into the hockey game scoring on their first two shots of the night. It was all EC Red Bull Salzburg for most of the frame, who carried the better of the play but didn't really generate much offence. EC Red Bull Salzburg can really move, very strong-good skaters, nice crisp tape to tape passes and have some skill-soft hands with the puck. Vernon looked a little slow and couldn't seem to get much going, until picking up their game in the final five minutes. I thought the Vipers had the better of the scoring chances missed two wide open cages. The Vipers with two late goals tied the game. Very few whistles with almost no hitting as both teams stayed away from the physical play. Vernon outshot EC Red Bull Salzburg 11-6.

2nd Period: The Vipers carried their play over from the end of the 1st into the 2nd period, had some good jump to start the middle frame would get the games first powerplay, just over two minutes into the period. Early into the man advantage Odeen Tufto was robbed at the side of the net, after EC Red Bull Salzburg's starting goaltender Wouter Peeters come across the crease to make a huge blocker save off Tufto keeping this game tied at two. This was the only quality chance Vernon would get as EC Red Bull Salzburg would kill off the minor. Vernon playing with a lot more energy, looked good to start the period. The Vipers with atleast two good opportunities in close forced Wouter Peeters into making two difficult saves off goal mouth scrambles, with a ton of traffic in front. I thought the Vipers had a slight edge in play early before both teams went back and fourth. Just before the midway mark David Matejovic's shot from the blueline may have went off someone in front forced former Penticton Vees goaltender Brendan Barry into making a late pad save keeping this game tied. A few minutes later Florian Baltram with a quick shot from the corner surprised Barry and the Vipers who once again had to make a quick save before Viper Captain Colton McCarthy come back the other way with a redirect in front couldn't beat Wouter Peeters who made a nice save off McCarthy from in close. Just past the halfway mark Vernon would get their second look with the PP but it was EC Red Bull Salzburg who took advantage of a sloppy Viper powerplay. Niklas Postel & Valentin Busch lead the way shorthanded two on one, Postel would keep and shoot just missed the net after "AP" Chris Jandric made a strong defensive play coming back into the play. EC Red Bull Salzburg would kill off the minor. Just as the penalty expired Valentin Busch come back the other way on an odd man rush, forcing Vipers goaltender Brendan Barry to make a big save off a three on two from in close. The Vipers then went into a mental lapse as EC Red Bull Salzburg jumped on Vernon who looked to fall asleep. EC Red Bull Salzburg took advantage of some carless Viper plays who turned over the puck on a few plays, were being outskated and outworked for a good three or four minutes. It was tied 2-2 after 40 minutes of play. I thought the Vipers got off to a good start, had some good looks-chances early to start the 2nd period, couldn't get much going with the powerplay (0-2). EC Red Bull Salzburg had their fare chances as this was a more evenly matched period. Again very little if any physical play but both teams made a little more contact in and along the boards. EC Red Bull Salzburg outshot Vernon 8-7.

3rd Period: EC Red Bull Salzburg got off to a good start, carried the play early before grabbing the lead. Daniel Wachter beat Brendan Barry early giving EC Red Bull Salzburg a 3-2 lead at 2:31 Maximilian Egger with the lone assist. But just over three minutes later Brett Stapley took advantage of a EC Red Bull Salzburg defenceman who lost an edge, went down. Stapley would go in all alone for the breakaway beat Wouter Peeters who knocked the net off while trying to stop Stapley tied the game 3-3 at 5:39 Stapley's goal was unassisted. Peeters tried complaining to the referee the net was knocked off before the puck had crossed the goal line but the goal stood. Peeters knocked the net off with his leg-skate backing up into the net, trying to stop Stapley. The net was knocked off before the puck went in, but the goal stood. It was tied up at three. But just three minutes later Colton McCarthy took an undisciplined penalty as he was heading to the bench, giving EC Red Bull Salzburg their first and only look with the man advantage. Marek Valach gave EC Red Bull Salzburg a 4-3 lead with the PP goal after ripping home a wicked wrist shot beat Barry topshelf hitting the water bottle at 9:51 Christof Wappis & #86 (not listed in the lineup) collected the helpers. With seven and a half minutes remaining Jimmy Lambert would get a great opportunity to tie the game but would be robbed by Peeters who made his best and biggest save of the night, stacking the pads off Lambert keeping this a one goal game. But just over two minutes later Liam Finlay did all the work to keep the play alive, dished off to "AP" Chris Jandric who setup Latrell Charleson who made a nice move inside the EC Red Bull Salzburg blueline before setting up Finlay at the side of the net to tied the game 4-4 at 15:06 Charleson and Jandric with the assists. But just fourty seven seconds later Maximilian Egger would get stopped in close by Barry who let out a huge rebound before Daniel Wachter scored his second of the night giving EC Red Bull Salzburg a 5-4 lead at 15:53 Egger with the lone assist. Vernon then couldn't get up ice as EC Red Bull Salzburg played a very shutdown style of game in the final minutes as the Vipers trying to get Brendan Barry to the bench for the extra attacker. Barry would eventually get to the bench for the extra attacker with just over 1:20 to go but again the Vipers had troubles getting soul possession before Daniel Wachter hit the open cage for his third goal of the night, gave EC Red Bull Salzburg a 6-4 lead at 19:31 Emil Quaas with the lone helper. This was the end of the night for most Viper fans, as several started making their way for the exits. EC Red Bull Salzburg would wind down the remaining seconds off the clock coming away with the 6-4 victory. Both teams would lineup at centre ice and exchange hand shakes to finish the game. I thought EC Red Bull Salzburg was the better of the two teams for most of the period. The Vipers had their chances but I thought EC Red Bull Salzburg carried the better of the play at times. Both teams didn't get a lot of chances but scored on their opportunities. Both teams seemed to step up the physical play a little in the final frame, playing with a lot more contact-hitting compared to the first two periods. EC Red Bull Salzburg outshot Vernon 13-3.

Top Player's: (Vernon)

The line of Brett Stapley (1 goal & 1 assist), Liam Finlay (1 goal & 1 assist) and Ben Butcher (1 goal) was the Vipers best unit going tonight. These three were by far the best players for Vernon. Stapley with two points has really come along ways since the start of the season. I would think the Vipers most improved player to date. Stapley scored the game tying goal on a third period breakaway had a great opportunity in the 1st period, somehow missed a wide open cage. Finlay and Stapley showed signs of chemistry playing together, were really clicking, making some nice passing plays, set one another up in the opening period. Finlay was the Vipers best player tonight, was flying, played with a ton of jump, was weaving in and out of defenders, was hard to contain most of the night. Somehow missed a wide open net, just fourty five seconds into the game.

Charley Michalowski I thought played very well in the loss. Had a real good scoring chance in the 1st couldn't beat Wouter Peeters.

Jake Toor "AP" Made his Vipers debut, I thought for a young kid playing his first game with the Vipers played well for the situation. Needs a bit of work on his skating, but the tall lanky kid played well as a callup.

Keaton Gordon "AP" Also called up making his Viper debut tonight caught my attention. Played well for his first game with Vernon. Has some decent size, was involved in the play, played hard and skated hard.

Jimmy Lambert Had atleast two maybe three good chances, couldn't find the back of the net, played well in the loss.

Game Thought's: (Vernon)

I thought the Vipers got off to a bit of a slow start, were outplayed and outskilled early to start the game. Vernon (Liam Finlay) missed a wide open cage off the opening puck drop, did generate-get the better of the scoring chances but it was EC Red Bull Salzburg who jumped on the Vipers, getting out to a quick 2-0 lead just less then five minutes into the game. The Vipers finally got their game going late in the period before tying the game on two late 1st period goals. As the game went on I thought the Vipers played better but didn't really test Wouter Peeters. Peeters who made a few big saves wasn't overly tested by Vernon who managed just twenty one shots on goal.On the other side of the rink, I didn't think Brendan Barry played that well. Barry who has struggled-hasn't looked overly impressive since joining the Vipers let in the first two EC Red Bull Salzburg goals on their first two shots. Barry was sliding around in the crease through out the game, was lucky he wasn't beat after being caught out of position on several plays in close. Barry wiffed at a few EC Red Bull Salzburg shots that if hit the net would have gone in. In the 3rd the Vipers were outplayed didn't get a lot of zone time, would score twice on just three shots in the final frame. Overall I thought Vernon was outskated-outskilled for most of the night, the Vipers passing and skill level is no where near close EC Red Bull Salzburg. Former Vipers forward Trevor Keenan was at tonight's game.

Top Player's: (EC Red Bull Salzburg)

Niklas Postel Caught my attention, played well through out the game.

Valentin Busch also played well, plays at both ends of the rink, can skate, move the puck and was involved in the play through out the game.

Daniel Wachter (3 goals & 1 assist) Was by far EC Red Bull Salzburg's most dangerous forward. I would guess the smallest player out there tonight, was dangerous with and without the puck. Setup the games first goal before scoring three goals in the 3rd period. This kid is quick, can skate and has a lot of skill. Very quick hands, has a wicked wrist shot. Gave the Vipers trouble all evening.

Florian Baltram Was another forward that impressed me. Can skate, very skilled offensively, goes to the net, always in and around the net, really sees and reads the ice well. Had two good looks-chances tonight.

Maximilian Egger (2 assists) Had a strong night, also can skate, quick on his feet, gave the Vipers troubles through out the game.

Wouter Peeters (17 saves) I didn't think saw a lot of action, wasn't tested much but managed to make the saves when called apon. Made atleast three or four big saves, that looked like sure goals played well.

Game Thought's: (EC Red Bull Salzburg)

I was pretty impressed with EC Red Bull Sal;zburg. I didn't really know what to expect or see. This team can skate, there super quick, move the puck well, have a good transition game, make nice crisp tape to tape passes, have a lot of skill-offensive power. These kids don't miss many passes, I think I saw-counted three maybe four missed passes all night. For a bigger club, they don't hit much at all, stay away from the physical side but in the 3rd started to make some contact. Most of their roster are over 6' EC Red Bull Salzburg played well defensively, I really noticed in the 2nd period where the Vipers had no time or space to make a pass, couldn't get anything going. The Vipers had troubles coming through the neutral zone, really limited the Vipers time and space in that 2nd period. Overall a pretty entertaining hockey game. The referees let both teams play, only calling three minors. I don't think there was a lot of penalties, but they could have called a few more that I thought missed. Overall a good job reffing.
