My head coach can beat up your head coach! Roll back the clock to about 1987 during an AHL game between the Rochester Americans and the Adirondack Red Wings. Current Vernon Vipers (BCHL) coach Mark Ferner gets accosted by former NHL enforcer Steve Martinson in the exit tunnel…words are exchanged and then punches! Even Ferner’s teammate Scott Metcalfe was about to scale the glass to get in to help.
Straight out of the pages of Slapshot, both men toss some bombs before security and staff get involved to break it up. Martinson who once racked up 432 PIMS in just 69 games with Hershey just recently coached the ECHL Allen Americans to a league championship last year. Ferner meanwhile has taken the Vipers to the RBC cup three times wining twice and a runner up finish.
