Vipers Bring Another Ferner On Board

Thursday, July 9, 2015

The Vernon Vipers have traded defenceman Mitch Meek to the West Kelowna Warriors for defenceman Mac Ferner.

The Vernon product brings with him a hard nose style that should be a
welcome addition to the Snakes.  Last season he tallied 2 goals and 9 assists with 57 penalty minutes in 49 games.

Meek leaves the Vipers after just one season in which he played 50 games and recorded 16 points.

This trade will reunite Mac with his father Mark who is in his second
tenure as the Head Coach of the Vipers.  It will be the first time that Mark has ever coached his son in organized hockey at any level and both are looking forward to it.

The Vipers would like to welcome Mac to the club, while wishing Mitch the best of luck in the future.

3-way Deal

Thursday, July 9, 2015 - Submitted by Kyle Anderson

The West Kelowna Warriors have been involved in a 3-way BCHL trade with the Vernon Vipers and Prince George Spruce Kings.

The Warriors have sent defenseman Mac Ferner (95) to the Vernon Vipers in exchange for defenseman Mitch Meek (96).

Ferner will be reunited with his dad Mark, as he enters his 2nd season of his 2nd tenure as the Vipers bench boss.

The Warriors then sent Meek north to the Prince George Spruce Kings in exchange for the BCHL-CHL listing rights of forward Luke Harrison (95).

Harrison, who's younger brother Jake is committed to the Warriors for this season, enters his 20-year old season with the Kamloops Blazers of the Western Hockey League.

The Blazers currently have 6 overage players on their roster, while the WHL limit is 3.

West Kelowna is familiar with the overage rule in the WHL, as they added captain Andrew Johnson to the team last year from the Swift Current Bronco's.

Harrison finished last season with 23 points in 69 games.

  1. I like this trade for the Vipers! I liked Mitch Meek but picking up Mac Ferner a veteran two year BCHL defenceman that turns 20 this season is a big addition to the Vernon backend. Ferner plays physical, plays with an edge, isnt afraid of getting involved after the whistle and likes to mix it up now and again. Ferner was a big thorn in the Vipers side last season in almost all the Vernon-West Kelowna games. With the addition of Ferner this puts the Vipers with just two d-men for this coming season. Mitchell Oliver is the lone Viper defenceman returning from last season. It will be interesting to see who the Vipers have recruited, especially on defence.

Most of the rest of the league has been very busy this off season, making several announcements regarding trades-recruited players. The Vipers on the other hand have been very quiet, non of us Viper fans know whats going on with next years roster. The Vipers have a possible 11 players returning. Vernon is going to need some scoring & defence this coming season, after losing all of their top scorers other then Liam Finlay.
