For anyone who could not attend or watch tonight’s Vipers game here are my thoughts and views from tonight’s game. You may agree or disagree but we all have our own view and opinion on any game we watch. This is my opinion and my thoughts on how I saw tonight’s game. I try to be unbiased and give a fare recap on both sides. Thanks for stopping by & visiting my blog.
I was at tonight's Vipers-Silverbacks game as Salmon Arm defeated Vernon 4-2 in front of 1,697 fans at the Shaw Centre.
Starting Goaltenders:
Vernon: Danny Todosychuk
Salmon Arm: Angus Redmond
1st Period: Mackenzie Bauer off the opening faceoff would get a great look at the net, get a quick shot off from in close but couldnt beat Angus Redmond who made a big save off the opening draw. Just over a minute later Jagger Williamson on the Viper attack ripped a hard shot from the circle forced Redmond to make a big pad save as the Vipers with two good quality chances in the opening minute and a half. Vernon couldnt continue the pressure allowed the Silverbacks to get going as Salmon Arm slowly took over the play. Three minutes later Joshua Laframboise with a shot from the circle was stopped by Danny Todosychuk who made a big save off the rush, two minutes later Todosychuk was forced into making a quick glove save as both goaltenders were busy in the opening minutes. Vernon would get the games first two shots on goal before SA responded with four straight before the Vipers would go almost nine minutes without a shot on net. The Backs skating hard really moving the puck in a hurry were carrying the play. The Vipers with several turnovers inside their own end had troubles clearing the zone and getting through the neutral zone. The Silverbacks were doing a great job at shutting down Vernon's offence clogging up the neutral zone. The Vipers would get the games first powerplay just before the midway mark, getting pressure got off four good shots but couldnt capitalize as Angus Redmond was good on the penalty kill as Salmon Arm killed off the minor. Just as the penalty expired Brandon Egli with a brutal turnover in front of Danny Todosychuk allowed Carson Bolduc to scoop up the loose puck before missing an open cage as the Backs come very close to opening the scoring on a Vernon turnover. The Vipers went back on the powerplay, this time only managed one shot were now 0-2 with the man advantage as the Silverbacks come up with a good penalty kill. Taylor Maruya with a great opportunity with a minute to go in the opening period couldnt beat Todosychuk before the Vipers would get a scramble in front of the Backs crease were banging away at the loose puck had several cracks down low couldnt jam one home before the buzzer. It was 0-0 after 20 minutes of play. The Vipers with a good start to the game, had two good chances in the first minute and a half couldnt generate much until the final few seconds on a scramble in front of the Silverbacks net. Salmon Arm was really flying, skating hard, were strong on the puck, forced Vernon into several turnovers inside their own zone carried the better of the play and were the better of the two teams. The Backs with some good chances also couldnt cash in. Vernon outshot Salmon Arm 8-5.
2nd Period: Just sixteen seconds into the frame SA would get the games first goal. Off the opening draw Carson Bolduc setup Taro Hirose who ripped a low hard shot was stopped by Danny Todosychuk who kicked out a big rebound to a wide open Joshua Laframboise who spotted the back of the net giving Salmon Arm an early 1-0 lead at 0:16 Hirose & Bolduc collected the helpers. The Vipers a little slow to start the middle frame looked a little lackadaisical as the Backs jumped on Vernon early. The Vipers would catch a break and get an early PP their third of the night. The Vipers needed just over three minutes to get their first shot of the period before a shot from the point beat Angus Redmond but hit the post. Salmon Arm with another good penalty kill killed off the penalty. Less then two minutes later the Silverbacks would get their first shot with the man advantage. Phil Midleton's point shot went off a Salmon Arm player before bouncing off a Vernon d-man in front forced Vipers starting goaltender Danny Todosychuk to react quickly making a tough save with his shoulder. Still on the PP Thomas Plese spotted Taylor Maruya who was able to walk in untouched beat Todosychuk giving Salmon Arm a 2-0 lead at 7:55 Plese and Colton Thibault with the assists. Just past the halfway mark Shane Danyluk gave Luke Shiplo a shot to the head, as Shiplo went down was down for several minutes before slowly leaving the ice going straight to the Vipers dressing room and not returning. Danyluk was given two minutes for checking to the head and a ten minute misconduct. On the PP TJ Dumonceaux on a second opportunity down low went high glove over Silverbacks starting goaltender Angus Redmond getting Vernon on the board were down 2-1 at 13:09 Liam Finlay and Thomas Aldworth picked up the helpers. Less then a minute later tempers heated up in a hurry as a major scrum formed inside the Viper blueline as almost everyone on the ice minus the goaltenders got involved. Lots of pushing and shoving, punches were thrown and lots of chirpping exchanged between both teams. SA would come away with their second powerplay of the night-period but a good penalty kill by Vernon and the Vipers were able to kill off the minor. It was 2-1 Salmon Arm after 40 minutes of play. The Backs got the all important first goal and jumped on the Vipers early. Scoring just sixteen seconds into the frame gave the Silverbacks a 1-0 lead before jumping out to a two goal lead. Vernon slow and not showing alot of energy were outplayed for a second straight period. Both teams didnt generate or create much for chances before the Vipers would get on the scoreboard. Vernon with one powerplay goal struggling with the man advantage. The Vipers had some good looks at the net, but couldnt hit the net missing on several shots from in close. Salmon Arm playing with alot more jump and energy played with alot more grit and edge. Shots were even 5-5.
3rd Period: The Vipers come out with alot of jump and energy as Jagger Williamson with a great opportunity in the first minute and a half couldnt beat Angus Redmond who flashed the leather made a nice glove save from in tight. Vernon playing with alot more energy, was finally skating in the opening few minutes. The Backs would get an early PP and capitalize. Taylor Maruya's shot missed the goal come off the back boards right to Thomas Plese who beat Danny Todosychuk who come across the crease tried making the save couldnt stop Plese as Salmon Arm jumped out to a 3-1 lead at 7:06 Maruya and Phil Midleton with the assists. Less then two minutes later (AP) Ninoi Tetteh with a brutal turnover allowed Ross Heidt to setup Carson Bolduc giving Salmon Arm a 4-2 lead at 8:54 Heidt with the lone assist. This really took the life out of Vernon who now down by two couldnt seem to get much of anything going. SA playing a very physical game were really hitting the Vipers on every chance, were finishing their checks. With five minutes remaining Vernon would get another powerplay and get their second powerplay goal of the night. Colton McCarthy setup Jagger Williamson with a nice cross crease pass got Vernon within two were down 4-2 at 16:14 the intensity level raised as both teams got away with some ugly plays behind the play. Several high sticking calls were missed on both sides as both teams were doing alot of chirpping between the benches. Thomas Aldworth and Anthony Latina were doing alot of yapping back and fourth between the two benches as the Backs got under Vernon's skin. Williamson's goal seemed to give some life into the Vipers as Vernon responded with a good push for the final few minutes. With good pressure the Vipers had some good looks couldnt hit the net or beat Angus Redmond. Thomas Aldworth come very close to making this a one goal game couldnt beat Redmond down low after making a huge pad save with 1:41 to go before Riley Brandt alone inside the circle went high but just over the top bar missing the net. Tempers would once again heat up with just six seconds remaining as again lots of pushing and shoving, lots of trash talking on the ice and between both benches as these two teams dont like one another. Riley Brandy and Colton McCarthy were both tossed from the game before the final buzzer. Salmon Arm would come away with a hard fought victory 4-2 taking the regular season series 4-3-1 The Vipers showed their most energy played with some jump off the start of the period but couldnt hold off the Backs as Salmon Arm with two quick back to back goals basically put the game away. Vernon couldnt seem to respond-recover until the final few minutes, but by then it was too late. Salmon Arm with a physical, hard hitting, fiesty game totally earned the win. Salmon Arm outshot Vernon 9-8.
Top Players: (Vernon)
Liam Finlay (1 assist) Was really skating, moving the puck and creating chances was the only Viper that really showed anything tonight. Finlay looked to have lots of jump in his game couldnt do it all picked up one assist.
Danny Todosychuk (15 saves) Didnt see alot of action but did make atleast three big saves in the opening period with the game still scoreless. Todosychuk may want to have the Silverbacks first goal of the game back, after kicking out a huge rebound to a wide open Joshua Laframboise. Played well in a game where there wasnt alot of activity-shots at both ends of the rink.
Game Thought's: (Vernon)
The Vipers didnt play very well in a game where they were outhit, outworked at times and out muscled. Both teams didnt generate a whole lot of offensive chances but the Vipers didnt play with alot of jump or energy for most of the game. The Vipers struggled in their own end defensively, giving up way too many pucks, coughing up the puck in and around the net, had troubles getting out of their own end. I thought Vernon come out to start the 3rd with some jump and energy looked a little too laid back and played pretty soft for most of the night. Being outplayed for most of the night, they had two back to back powerplays in the 1st were being outplayed at the time really needed a powerplay goal to get some momentum-spark. The Vipers actually would get the games first three powerplays but couldnt capitalize, allowed the Backs to hang around before Salmon Arm jumped out to the two goal lead. The Vipers four game winning streak was snapped are basically playing for pride and also trying to catch the Nanaimo Clippers for the second best record in the BCHL needed to play with a little more gritt, as this could easily be a first round playoff matchup. The Vipers stayed away from the physical game, didnt go to the grey areas didnt step up their game and try and match Salmon Arm's high tempo-physical style of game. Vernon actually did get some good looks at the net but had troubles hitting the net. A once long time rivarly, you could feel the emotion and intensity on the ice between these two teams as the hatred got very heated through out tonight's game. Several scrums-altercations after the whistle. The Vipers seemed to be more involved in chirpping after the whistle, as the Backs got under the Vipers skin tonight and it showed. Vernon needed to respond to the physical play and they didnt. Vernon with one game remaining in the regular season will play in Penticton Friday.
Top Players: (Salmon Arm)
Phil Midleton (1 assist) With the loss to defenceman Andrew Farny Midleton will be leaned on for that top defensive role. Has played very well vs Vernon this season played very well again tonight. Picking up an assist likes to get pucks to the net in a hurry, has a hard shot from the point, good skater, moves the puck well likes to engage in the play at the same time.
Carson Bolduc (1 goal & 1 assist) Was involved in the play through out the game, was skating hard, getting involved had a great chance to open the scoring in the 1st period couldnt find the back of the open net on a Viper turnover.
Thomas Plese (1 goal & 1 assist) Played a huge role in getting under the skin of several Vipers. Was involved in alot of the after the whistle activities played with an edge.
Bryden Marsh was really flying, skating hard, played well up front for the Silverbacks.
Taylor Maruya (1 goal & 1 assist) I thought was Salmon Arm's best player this evening. Another kid who has played very well vs the Vipers this year was all over the ice. A good strong skater, can move the puck, create offensice chances, is dangerous with and without the puck.
Joshua Laframboise (1 goal) Was another Salmon Arm forward who was involved in the play, played hard and competed. Had a few opportunities.
Game Thought's: (Salmon Arm)
Salmon Arm has been one of if not the hottest team since the Christmas break and its showed, as the Silverbacks have climbed up the standings now sits 3rd in the Division tied in points with West Kelowna. The Backs have now won three of the last four meetings with Vernon seem to have the Vipers number as of late. SA fighting for their playoff lives come ready to play and it showed. The Silverbacks with a strong night all around was by far the better of the two teams. Salmon Arm cant take a night off needs all the wins they can get just to get into the playoffs, while Vernon on the other hand has basically been playing for pride the last few weeks with 2nd place already locked up just waiting to see who they will face in the opening rounds of the playoffs. The Backs carried most of the play through out all three periods were really skating, played with alot of jump and energy, were laying the body on the Vipers every chance they could, finishing their checks. SA getting under the skin of the Vipers played with an edge. Salmon Arm with a good penalty kill, did give up two powerplay goals but the first three powerplays went to Vernon. The Backs got the key saves from Angus Redmond when needed and killed off all three minors with it still scoreless. The Vipers get a PP goal or two and this is a different hockey game. I really like the Backs intensity, played very well defensively, limited Vernon's shots and chances gave the Vipers all kinds of troubles defensively forcing the Vipers into several turnovers. The Backs did a great job at shutting down Vernon's offensive players clogging up the neutral zone.
