Former Vernon Viper Fowlie Snaps Slump In Big Way:

Here is an article I found on former Vernon Vipers forward Cody Fowlie.

Fowlie is in his second year with the University of Regina Cougars. Fowlie started the 2012-13 season with the WHL Everett Silvertips before being released and signing with the Vipers on October 16th 2012.  Fowlie played in just three games before leaving Vernon and signing with the Kelowna Rockets on October 22nd 2012. In three games with the Vipers Fowlie recorded (1-goal-1-assist-2-points). In 59 regular season games with the Rockets Fowlie collected (17-goals-23-assists-40-points).

Cougars' Fowlie snaps slump in big way

After a solid rookie season, Cody Fowlie wasn't worried about suffering the dreaded sophomore jinx.

His teammates on the University of Regina Cougars men's hockey team then raised the spectre.

"Some of the guys were talking about it in the room last year and maybe it got in my head a little bit - until today," Fowlie said with a chuckle Saturday after collecting two goals and two assists in Regina's 8-2 Canada West victory over the Lethbridge Pronghorns at the Co-operators Centre.

"You've got to work hard to find success. I've just got to keep doing that."

Fowlie led Regina in scoring in the 2013-14 campaign, managing 19 points in 28
regular-season games. He registered at least one point in 14 of the Cougars' first 21 games, but then was held scoreless in their final seven of the season.

His drought continued through his first four games this season before he finally registered an assist. His wait for a goal lasted until his eighth game and he added another goal in his ninth contest, which was played Oct. 31.

The 22-year-old product of Airdrie, Alta., had three assists over his next eight games, but didn't score again until Saturday. It was the first two-goal game of his Cougars career.

"I was trying too hard to do a little too much," Fowlie said when asked about his slump. "(On Saturday) my linemates (Sanfred King and Dylen McKinlay) and I decided to keep it simple and see where it took us. It ended up working out."

Much to his relief. "(A slump) is always in the back of your mind," said Fowlie, whose first career four-point game increased his point total this season to a team-leading 10. "Last year, I never really found that, so it's kind of a new thing for me this year. I'm just trying to battle through it."

The Cougars have had trouble scoring all season - they had 31 goals through their first 17 games before Saturday's eruption - so Fowlie wasn't alone in his struggles.

But the fact that last season's leading scorer was having trouble surprised head coach Todd Johnson.

"It's not like it was (because of) a lack of chances," Johnson said. "Goaltenders were making saves or he was missing the net.

"He shoots the puck extremely hard, so we knew (the end of the drought) was going to happen."

Fowlie wasn't the only player to enjoy a slumpbusting game Saturday. Christian Magnus also had a pair of goals - his first two in 14 games this season. Like Fowlie, Magnus had six goals last season and was expected to build on that total this season.

King also scored two goals for Regina, which got singles from Troy Hunter and Brody Luhning. It was the first time the Cougars had scored eight goals in a game since Oct. 4, 2008, when they posted an 8-1 win over the Saskatchewan Huskies.

Brandon Clowes and Justin Valentino scored for Lethbridge (3-15-0).

Cougars netminder Lucas Gore made 16 saves. Pronghorns starter Warren Shymko stopped 23 shots and Alex Sirard blocked 12 in relief.

After opening the season with nine straight losses, the Cougars are 6-2-1 in their past nine games. They go into the Christmas break with a 6-11-1 record.

"Maybe it's a little bit of bad timing," Fowlie said of the break. "But I think that having a good end to the first half is going to show us that we can play and compete in this league and be a top team."
