Larry Black Memorial Video

This past week the Vernon Vipers, the BCHL and the Vernon Hockey Community lost a cherished colleague and friend, Larry Black.

Larry Black ( or Blackie as he was known to friends and colleagues) started his hockey career as the GM of the KIJHL Revelstoke Grizzlies in the ‘90s. He ran the program for 6 years. During his tenure there they won three Divisional Championships. The Grizzlies were affiliated with the Merritt Centennials at the time who were being coached by Mike Vandekamp. When Vandekamp became the head coach of the Vipers in 2001-2002 he brought Black on as a regional scout.

Larry was a regional scout for 5 years and in 2007 became head scout and director of scouting for the Vipers. He was instrumental in bringing such players as Aaron Volpatti, Chris Crowell, Connor and Kellen Jones, Hunter Bishop, Kyle Bigos and Adam Tambellini on to the Viper team. That’s the talent that won the Vipers back-to-back Royal Bank Cup Championships in 2009 and 2010 and runner up in 2011. That also includes winning the Fred page Cup 3 times, the Doyle Cup 3 times and 3 BCHL Championships.

Duncan Wray, President of the Vernon Vipers stated, “Larry was a fixture around many arenas in B.C. and Alberta. He was an excellent recruiter, and cared deeply about his players. He was an integral part of our RBC cup teams, having fit so many pieces into that puzzle. He will be greatly missed.”

In 2013 Larry joined the Salmon Arm Silverbacks as the Assistant General Manager and Director of Player Personnel.

Larry was known for his wicked sense of humor, lending an ear to chew and advice for anyone lucky enough to call him a friend. Heaven’s hockey team just picked up another fantastic scout and even better man.

The Vernon Vipers will honor Larry’s memory with his initials on their helmets for the rest of this season.

Larry is survived by his wife Gay, 3 grown children and 5 grandchildren.
