A very familiar face will be at Juan de Fuca Arena on Friday when the Victoria Grizzlies open training camp.

General manager and head coach Brad Knight swung a deal on Wednesday to bring goaltender Michael Stiliadis back to the fold after he finished last season as the most valuable player at the Royal Bank Cup with the Dauphin Kings of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League.

He joins veteran Nic Renyard of Victoria and highly touted six-foot-four newcomer Sean Cleary, of Centerville, Massachusetts, in a battle between the pipes for the B.C. Hockey League team.

“When I look at our main camp roster I have 12 defencemen for seven spots and I have probably 16 forwards for 12 spots. I thought, I can’t have competition in two of the three positions and not put pressure on the guys who are in camp for goal,” said Knight, who made the deal between three teams to get Stiliadis back to Victoria.

The 20-year-old played 31 games with the Grizzlies in 2012-13 and posted a 14-13-0 record with a 2.96 goals against average and .894 save percentage. He finished last season with Dauphin where he played in 15 games and was a spectacular 14-1-0 with a 2.25 GAA and .921 save percentage.

He also had stints in Vernon of the BCHL and Georgetown of the Ontario Junior Hockey League.

“Sean is unproven, but he has a tremendous resumé for a kid who hasn’t played in this league yet. And Nic has been outstanding statistically in the BCHL,” said Knight. “I just felt that if we’re going to be a team that wants to compete to be the best, we have to have the best competition in all three positions and that’s what we did today.”

Knight had acquired forward Connor McCallum from Whitecourt of the Alberta Junior Hockey League, but then three teams (including Cornwall) eventually flipped bodies to land Stiliadis back on the Island.

“At the end of the day, goaltending is the hardest position in hockey. It takes a tremendous amount of confidence and abilities, so I wanted to make sure I did the right thing by the hockey club. When there is a guy like Stiliadis available and with this being one of the places he wanted to play, I think we had to do due diligence and bring him in,” Knight said.

He is expected to be here on Friday when the Grizzlies open camp at Juan de Fuca Arena at 2:30 p.m. Camp registration is set for tonight.

Kings Deal for McCallum

Thursday, 28.08.2014

The Dauphin Kings were a part of a 4 team trade this last week. Coming to the Kings is 19 year old forward Connor McCallum who played last season with the Whitecourt Wolverines in the AJHL as well as future considerations.

“Connor will bring tenacity, a strong work ethic and excellent character to our hockey club.” said Kings HC/GM Marlin Murray “He’s a big body that competes hard.”

The 6’2”, 200lb forward will arrive in Dauphin later this afternoon for the Kings Main Camp.

Going to the Victoria Grizzlies is 20 year old goaltender Michael Stiliadis.

“Stilly was very good for us last season and as a team are likely not as successful without him” stated Murray. “We were advised by his father and family advisor in the summertime that he would only be reporting to the BCHL for his final year of Junior A hockey. We are happy to get Connor and maximum PDF back in the deal because many BCHL teams had their goaltenders solidified for the upcoming season. We want to wish Stilly all the best.”

Kings Main Camp starts today with player registration and fitness testing. Players will be on ice starting Friday. the JoFo Cup Game goes Sunday at 7pm.
