Vernon-Surrey Trade:

Last week I noticed Surrey Eagles 20 year old goaltender Devon Fordyce listed on the Vipers roster via the BCHL website.  With no official press release from either the Eagles or Vipers how did Vernon acquire the veteran goaltender?  Thanks to Eagles play by play man Chris Wahl, here is how the deal went down.

This is posted on Chris Wahl's Surrey Eagles Blog:

Eagles Re-Acquire Hannoun, Add Butcher

Thursday, June 12, 2014

The Eagles and Vernon Vipers announced this week the future considerations owing from a deal involving former Surrey captain Brett Mulcahy just prior to the January 10th deadline, with the Eagles acquiring two offensive catalysts in Demico Hannoun and Ben Butcher from the 2014 RBC Cup hosts.

Hannoun's CJHL rights revert to Surrey after one season in the North Okanagan. The North Delta product was a key member of the Eagles' run to the 2013 RBC Cup semi-final. Hannoun put up 44 points in Vernon last year, finishing fifth in team scoring, and in three seasons in the BCHL has tallied 103 total points. The guy can score: my first memory of Hannoun was a first-period hat-trick he scored at South Surrey Arena against my former club, Trail, back in January of 2012.

Butcher, from Bellingham, spent last season in Chilliwack, where he tallied 31 points (13-18) with the re-building Chiefs. The son of former Canuck Garth Butcher, Ben should fit nicely into Surrey's top six as a power forward. The 19 year-old has put up a total of 49 points in 111 career BCHL regular-season games with the Chiefs and Rivermen.

Welcome back Demico, and welcome to the Eagles Ben!

To complete the deal, Surrey did send goaltender Devon Fordyce to the Vipers. I'm sure "Fordy" will do well with a fresh start in Vernon; he's a first-class young man and a hard worker to boot. Good luck with the Snakes!

  1. By the looks of of things, it looks like Demico Hannoun will be returning to the league this coming season. I thought Hannoun was finished (had a scholarship for next season). Hannoun looked great and was one of the Vipers leading point getters along side Mason Blacklock at the start of the season, but as the year went on Hannoun's points and play went down hill. Lots of Viper fans were very dissapointed with Hannoun's selfish play and poor attitude on the ice, it looked like the young kid didnt want to be out there on several nights. Very slow on the back check, stayed out way longer then the rest of his line and seemed to sulk-pout if he wasnt given the puck or involved in the play. Many Viper fans wanted his traded at the Trade deadline, just to his poor attitude.

I was a little surprised they traded Ben Butcher in such a quick turn around. Maybe the Eagles wanted a little more for Brett Mulcahy and with just a few players returning Vernon didnt have much to offer in return, so had to go out and get someone to finish off this trade? I was looking forward to seeing Butcher in a Viper uniform this coming season.

I was also surprised the Vipers acquired Devon Fordyce. Danny Todosychuk will be returning for his fourth season with his hometown team and has yet to be the teams #1 starter. You think enterting his fourth and final season he would like to be the #1 tender. I cant see Todosychuk sticking around as a backup for his final year of Junior hockey. I also cant see the Vipers going with two 20 yr old goaltenders next season. Maybe one of these two kids will be used for trade bait?

Guess will have to wait and see what happens over the summer.
