Capitals Re-Assign Former Viper Strachan To American Hockey League:

The Washington Capitals have re-assigned former Vernon Vipers defenceman Tyson Strachan to the American Hockey League Hershey Bears. Strachan is in his first season with the Capitals farm club was called up to the Capitals on November 14th 2013. Strachan signed with the Capitals as a free agent on July 8th 2013.

Strachan split last season between the American Hockey League (AHL) San Antonio Rampage and the NHL Florida Panthers. In 24 games with the Rampage Strachan collected (1-8-9) and in 38 games with the Panthers Strachan picked up (0-4-4). Strachan was drafted by Carolina in the 5th Round (137th overall) in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. Strachan signed as a free agent with the Florida Panthers in July 2011 after playing the previous four seasons with the AHL Peoria Rivermen & the St. Louis Blues.

Strachan played just one season in Vernon (2002-03) collecting (6-22-28) in 56 regular season games with the Vipers, before playing four years at Ohio State University.

Capitals Recall Orlov From Hershey, Re-assign Strachan to Hershey

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have recalled defenseman Dmitry Orlov from the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL) and re-assigned defenseman Tyson Strachan to Hershey, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.

Orlov, 22, ranks first among Hershey defensemen in points this season, earning nine points (three goals, six assists) in 10 games. The Novokuznetsk, Russia, native tallied an AHL career-high four points (one goal, three assists) on Oct. 19 in the Bears’ 4-0 win over the St. John’s IceCaps. Orlov has registered 44 points (12 goals, 32 assists) and 48 penalty minutes in 75 career AHL games.

The 5’11”, 211-pound defenseman has appeared in 65 career regular-season games for the Capitals, registering 20 points (three goals, 17 assists) and 18 penalty minutes. Orlov was drafted by Washington in the second round, 55th overall, in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

Strachan, 29, made his Capitals debut on Nov. 15 against Detroit. The Melfort, Saskatchewan, native registered 15 hits and two penalty minutes in five games with Washington this season. Strachan played in 38 games with the Florida Panthers last season, compiling four assists and 40 penalty minutes. The 6’3”, 210-pound defenseman has appeared in 125 career NHL games with St. Louis, Florida and Washington recording 13 points (one goal, 12 assists) and 129 penalty minutes.

Strachan has registered four assists and 22 penalty minutes in 11 games with the Bears this season. In 227 career AHL games, he has earned 72 points (12 goals, 60 assists) and 292 penalty minutes. Strachan spent four seasons at Ohio State University and was originally drafted by Carolina in the fifth round (137th overall) of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. The Capitals signed Strachan as a free agent on July 8, 2013.
