Eagles Re-Sign Former Vipers Defenceman Smeltzer:

The East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) Colorado Eagles have re-signed former Vernon Vipers defenceman Isaac Smeltzer.

Smeltzer is entering his third season with the Eagles. Smeltzer signed a amateur tryout contract with the Eagles on March.14th 2012 after completing his fourth season at Brock University before re-signing with the Eagles last season. In 58 games last year with Colorado Smeltzer had (2-5-7). Smeltzer played his first three and a half seasons in the BCHL with the Alberni Valley Bulldogs before being traded to Vernon in his final season of Junior hockey (2007-2008). Alberni Valley traded Smeltzer to Vernon on November, 29th 2007 for forward, Evan Witt and defenceman, Eliot Raibl. Smeltzer collected (6-17-23) in 29 regular season games with the Vipers.

Isaac Smeltzer Returns to Eagles Roster

The Colorado Eagles announced Tuesday that they have re-signed defenseman Isaac Smeltzer for the 2013-2014 season.

Smeltzer, a 6-foot-2, 205-pound blueliner, played in a 58 games last season with the Eagles, registering 2 goals and 5 assists. He also appeared in 5 playoff games, adding 2 assists. In Smeltzer’s 11 late appearances with the Eagles in 2011-2012 he posted 1 assist and saw action in 3 playoff games.

“I think Isaac took a big step forward last season,” said President and General Manager Chris Stewart. “He brings great size, toughness and a desire to win every night. He is another guy who adds character and accountability to our dressing room,” Stewart emphasized.

Prior to coming to Colorado, he recorded 42 points (8-34-42) and 270 penalty minutes in 106 games with Brock University, setting collegiate career highs in goals (4), assists (10), points (14) and PIMs (138) in 2011-12.  Before his four years with the Badgers, Smeltzer played three seasons in the British Columbia Hockey League, registering 69 points (19-50-69) and 327 PIMs in 158 games.

“It’s an honor to rejoin the Eagles,” Smeltzer expressed. “We will have a solid group returning this year and will be poised to win the franchise’s first Kelly Cup. I can’t wait to get the season started.”
