Vipers announce futures from Hadley trade

Published: May 09, 2013

The Vernon Vipers have a new foursome in their B.C. Hockey League den.

Head coach/GM Jason Williamson announced that forward Michael McNicholas, 19, and defenceman Josh Bryan, 20, will join the Snakes to complete the trade which sent all-star Aaron Hadley to the Nanaimo Clippers at the trading deadline.

Hadley played six games for the Shipmen before breaking a kneecap.

McNicholas recorded 10 goals and 32 points in 35 regular-season games. The product of Manhattan Beach, Calif. is committed to the NCAA Division 1 University of New Hampshire Wildcats for 2014-15.

“He’s an offensive-minded guy,” said Williamson. “We struggled to score goals last year and he’s  gifted  offensively and if we put him with the right guys, he’ll be a dangerous player.”

Bryan is a BCHL veteran with 159 regular-season games. He produced nine goals and 30 points last season. The 6-foot-1, 205 pounder from Sidney  had an excellent showing in the Western Canada Cup in Nanaimo.

“He’s an experienced guy who can play a top-line defensive pairing,” said Williamson. “His numbers were pretty good and he’s a guy we can lean on for leadership and play in all kinds of situations.”

The Vipers also signed a towering American defenceman and a Canadian offensive forward.

Mark Hamilton, a 6-foot-3, 225-pounder from Winthrop, Mass. captained the Salisbury Crimson Knights to the New England Prep School championship and won an Under 18 national title. He is committed to the University of Massachusetts-Amherst Minutemen for 2014-15.

Hamilton is rated 191st among North American skaters by Central Scouting for the June 30 entry draft in New Jersey.

“Mark is a physical d-man who has an offensive upside,” said Viper head coach/GM Jason Williamson. “I had the chance to watch Mark play at Nationals in Pittsburgh and I am very excited to have him as a part of our team.”

Forward Tyler Povelofskie, a 5-foot-11 Williams Lake product, racked up 18 goals, 32 points and 87 penalty minutes in 36 games with the Major Midget Cariboo (Prince George) Cougars last season.

“Tyler is a player that plays in all three zones and competes very hard,” said Williamson. “He also has tremendous character and will fit very well into our dressing room.”
