Series: Allen Wins Series 4-3

The Allen Americans came from behind to win one of the all-time classics in Game 7 of the Ray Miron Presidents’ Cup Finals by a 3-2 score in overtime in front of a sellout crowd of 6,125 at the Allen Event Center.  The game was the sixth Game 7 in CHL Finals history.

Todd Robinson scored the overtime game winner and Trevor Hendrikx scored the game-tying goal with 2:19 remaining in regulation.

In the early going, Allen had the best of the chances with a golden opportunity coming six minute into the game when a Wichita turnover led to two point blank chances for the Americans but Torrie Jung stopped one and a sliding defenseman blocked the other.

Just 30 seconds later, Wichita’s R.G. Flath took the puck and skated it into the zone blasting a shot past Aaron Dell for the early lead and his team leading eighth goal of the post-season.

The Americans had the only power play chance in the period thanks to a goalie interference call against the Thunder but failed to score.

Wichita outshot the Americans 12-6 in the period as Dell made 11 saves and Jung made six stops.

In the second period, Allen went on the power play for the second time in the game thanks to a tripping minor against the Thunder but again, Jung was sharp stopping several quality scoring chances.

The teams took matching minors in the early part of the period and skated four aside which created a great look for Neil Trimm who beat the defense and tried to tuck the puck past Dell but couldn’t find the room.

Midway through the period, the Thunder earned their first man advantage after a tripping call behind the Allen net.  On the power play, the Thunder could not manage many quality chances but did have Les Reaney in all alone as the PP expired but he was stopped by Dell.

Allen then had their third power play of the game and while generating some chances, the Americans turned the puck over creating a 3-on-2 where Flath delivered his second goal of the night, this one coming shorthanded giving his team a 2-0 lead.

The Americans put the pressure on late in the period but sticks and bounces were all in favor of the Thunder as Jung continued to make great saves and the Thunder defense did a great job of blocking shots.

Allen outshot the Thunder 16-4 in the period.

The Americans pulled out all stops in the third period trying to get something past Jung and finally at the 7:13 mark they succeeded with a scramble in front of the net and Jarret Lukin putting the puck across the line for his fourth of the post-season making the score 2-1.

With less than three minutes to play, the Americans tied things up with Trevor Hendrikx getting a shot past Jung for his third goal of the playoffs.  The game would head to overtime for just the second time in Game 7 Finals history (2004 Laredo beat Bossier-Shreveport).

In the overtime, the Americans capitalized on their momentum quickly with Todd Robinson scoring his sixth post-season goal giving him a league best 22 playoff points.

The Cup win for the Americans is their first in franchise history.
