Former Vipers Defenceman Smeltzer Suspended:

The East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) has suspended and fined former Vernon Vipers defenceman Isaac Smeltzer. Smeltzer is in his second season with the ECHL Colorado Eagles.  Smeltzer signed a amateur tryout contract with the Eagles last year (March.14th 2012) after completing his fourth season at Brock University before re-signing with the Eagles this season. In 46 games this year with Colorado Smeltzer has (2-5-7).  Smeltzer played his first three and a half seasons in the BCHL with the Alberni Valley Bulldogs before being traded to Vernon in his final season of Junior hockey (2007-2008). Alberni Valley traded Smeltzer to Vernon on November, 29th 2007 for forward, Evan Witt and defenceman, Eliot Raibl. Smeltzer collected (6-17-23) in 29 regular season games with the Vipers.

ECHL announces fines, suspensions

PRINCETON, N.J. – The ECHL on Saturday announced the following fines and suspensions.

Colorado’s Smeltzer fined, suspended

Colorado’s Isaac Smeltzer has been suspended for two games and fined an undisclosed amount as a result of his actions in ECHL Game #630, Utah at Colorado, on Feb. 22.

Smetlzer was assessed a match penalty for illegal check to the head under Rule #48.5 at 8:37 of the third period. He is fined and suspended under Rule #28 – Supplementary Discipline.

Smetlzer will miss Colorado’s games vs. Utah on Feb. 23 and Feb. 24.

Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the ECHL and the Professional Hockey Players’ Association, player fines collected by the ECHL are given to the PHPA for its ECHL Player’s Hardship Fund.
