'Celebrate the Legacy' Team of the Week

January 23, 2013

Led by senior forwards Jim Dowd, Tim Breslin and Jeff Napierala, senior defenseman Karl Johnston, junior defenseman Mark Astley, junior forward Sandy Moger, sophomore forward Doug Weight, sophomore goalie Darrin Madeley, freshman forward Clayton Beddoes and freshman defenseman Steven Barnes, Lake Superior finished the 1990-91 regular season in first place (26-2-4) in the nine-team CCHA standings, five points ahead of second-place Michigan.

The Lakers lost conference games to only Michigan (OT) and Ferris State in Jeff Jackson’s first season as head coach of the Lakers, and got two goals each from Dowd, Breslin and senior forward Tim Harris in a sweep of Illinois-Chicago, 5-3 and 3-1, in a best-of-three CCHA playoff quarterfinals to earn their fourth straight trip to Detroit’s Joe Louis Arena to face No. 4 Western Michigan in the semifinals. The Lakers rolled over the Broncos, 11-4, behind Weight’s natural hat trick and five-point night from Dowd (2-3-5) to set up a matchup with Michigan in the final. In the CCHA Championship game, Madeley made 27 saves and Beddoes scored twice, including the game winner on a spinning move in the slot in overtime, to give Lake Superior a 6-5 victory over the Wolverines. The win was the Lakers first CCHA playoff title and Beddoes’ four-point night (2-2-4) earned him the playoff MVP award.

In the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals at home, Lake Superior’s season came to an end when, after splitting the first two games with Clarkston, the Lakers lost the decisive game three, 4-3, to the Golden Knights and ended the season with a 36-5-4 overall record. The 1990-91 Lakers set program records that included most wins (36), most consecutive wins (15) and longest unbeaten streak (28). Jackson was named CCHA Coach of the Year, Dowd was CCHA Player of the Year and Napierala was Best Defensive Defenseman. Dowd, Weight, Johnston and Madeley were named to the All-CCHA First Team, Astley made the Second-Team and Beddoes and Barnes made the All-Rookie squad.

As part of the ‘Celebrate the Legacy’ final season, the CCHA is looking for all the players who have their name engraved on the Mason Cup, the CCHA’s playoff championship trophy.
