In the latest installment of the feast or famine scenario between the Vernon Vipers and the Trail Smoke Eaters this season, the Vipers overran the Smokies 9-2 in Trail on Saturday.

Previously, the Vipers had won 7-2 in Vernon on September 22 and the Smoke Eaters had blanked the Vipers 3-0 a week later in Trail. In the latter contest, Lyndon Stanwood was sensational as he stopped all 33 Viper shots.

Consequently, Jason Williamson told his troops on Saturday to “get lots of pucks to the net and make life difficult for Stanwood. He’s usually the main reason they win games so we wanted to go right after him.”

The strategy worked as the Vipers scored 16 seconds into the game. Off the opening draw, they chased a dump-in to the back boards and harried the Trail defence into a hasty clearing attempt. Ryan Renz intercepted and passed to defence mate Brett Corkey, who fired a low shot just into Stanwood’s left post with a crowd in front.

Jedd Soleway added to the lead at 10:25, banking a shot off Stanwood’s right pad from behind the extended goal line. Before the period was over, Mitch McAllister registered his first BCHL goal from a Ryan Renz rebound.

Vernon poured on the pressure in the second period, scoring four more goals. Jedd Soleway’s second goal of the game came at 2:16 with the Vipers holding a man advantage. Trail native Craig Martin then scored a beauty, cutting to the middle to shake two defenders and placing the puck inside Stanwood’s left post.

Mike Roberts scored a one-timer on Adam Tambellini’s setup, prompting Bill Birks to replace his starting goalie with Adam Todd. Tambellini beat Todd with a deft backhand tip of Kevin Guiltinan’s diagonal pass.

Pearce Eviston and Logan Mick beat Todd with perfectly placed shots in the third period. Mick’s strike was his first as a Junior A player.

Mitch Foyle scored with five seconds remaining in the second period and Adam Wheeldon knocked in a rebound with three seconds left in the game to deny Danny Todosychuk a shutout. 

Todosychuk was sharp in the Viper net, stopping 41 of 43 Trail shots.

Notes:

Luke Sandler drew a five-minute major for checking from behind in the second period. Recipient Michael Statchuk was knocked out of the game by the blow.

Mike Roberts and fellow rookie Jake Lucchini engaged in a spirited fight to start the third period.

The Vipers, who had struggled to score earlier in the season, have now found the net 18 times in the last three games, while winning all three.

Trail has now allowed the most goals in the league (97) while responding with 55.
