Chiefs Win Penalty Fest

In a game where penalties flowed as relentlessly as the nearby Fraser River, the host Chilliwack Chiefs defeated the Vernon Vipers 4-1 on Saturday.

Fittingly, the opening goal 3:32 into the game came on a Chiefs power play. Josh Hansen’s wraparound went through Austin Smith’s pads.

Jaret Babych’s high rocket, his first goal of the season, made the score 2-0 at 7:38 and the Chiefs seemed poised to run the undermanned Vipers out of the building. But the visitors fought back, quite literally.

Two lanky Ontario products engaged in a spirited bout a minute after the Babych goal. Cooper Rush, a 6’7½” import from Oakville and 6’3” Kevin Guiltinan, who came to the Vipers via London, each landed some heavy blows in a tilt that went the distance.

Their bout was followed at 10:03 by another spirited bare knuckle exchange when Ben Masella challenged Vernon’s Jedd Soleway after Soleway had levelled Austin Plevy at centre ice.

Before the game was over, another heavyweight bout ensued, this time between Vernon’s Geoff Crisfield and Chilliwack’s Kiefer McNaughton, at 18:28 of the second period.

Meanwhile, Adam Tambellini brought the score to 2-1 with a one-timer on a two man advantage four minutes into the second period, and Austin Plevy scored a pair of goals to put the game on ice.

The game was actually closer than the score might indicate, as the Chiefs had only a slight edge in shots and scoring chances. With the score at 2-1, Craig Martin blistered a shot that hit iron behind Mitch Gillam, or the game might have had a different outcome.

Gillam and Austin Smith took turns making spectacular saves as both teams created scoring chances from persistent fore checking.

In the final analysis, Chilliwack scored once in 10 power plays, while the Vipers were one for six. (Note: the BCHL game sheet is incorrect for both totals.)

Mathieu Tibbet missed the game for Chilliwack while the Vipers played with just nine forwards because of injuries to Braedan Russell, Mitch McAllister, Mitch VanTeeling, Logan Mick, and Pierce Eviston.
