Vipers tie up SilverBacks

Published: September 02, 2012

Aaron Hadley scored top shelf with 12 seconds left as the Vernon Vipers tied the Salmon Arm SilverBacks 2-2 in B.C. Hockey League preseason play Friday night at the Shaw Centre.

The same two teams ended the exhibition season Saturday night at Wesbild Centre.

The Vipers open the regular season Saturday night in Chilliwack against the Royal Bank Cup champion Penticton Vees, at the BCHL Showcase in Chilliwack.

Adam Tambellini had his shot blocked off a draw and Jedd Soleway recovered the puck behind the net and fed Hadley.

Mitch McAllister also scored for the Snakes, who went with Boston product Joe Young the whole way in net.

“Both their goals we put in our own net,” said Viper coach Jason Williamson “(Michael) Statchuk shot one in our net and one went in off a skate so you couldn’t fault our goalie.”

Williamson was going to release one forward Saturday night and was trying to complete a trade for another offensive forward.

The Vipers are allowed to carry 22 players, one more than last season.

In other preseason play Friday night, the Coquitlam Express derailed the SFU Clan 5-2, the West Kelowna Warriors shaded the Wenatchee Wild 5-4 and the Grande Prairie Storm stopped the Prince George Spruce Kings 4-2.

In action involving just BCHL teams, the Merritt Centennials doubled the Trail Smoke Eaters 4-2, the Nanaimo Clippers ambushed the Alberni Valley Bulldogs 8-2 and the Powell River Kings and Cowichan Valley Capitals tied 2-2.
