Avalanche Name Former Vipers Assistant Coach Chris Shaw New Head Coach-GM:

The WSHL Ontario Avalanche have named former Vernon Vipers Assistant Coach Chris Shaw new Head Coach Coach-GM.  Shaw who finished his first and only season as an Assistant Coach with the Vipers (2011-12) was released by the Vipers in the off season.  The Vipers finished the season with a 30-27-1-2 record finishing 5th in the Interior Conference missing the BCHL playoffs.

Chris Shaw of British Columbia has accepted the Head Coach / GM position with the WSHL’s Ontario Avalanche. Shaw’s coaching career started as an Assistant Coach with the Alberni Valley Bulldogs of the BCHL, followed by an Associate position with the Penticton Lakers in the KIJHL. In 2010-11, Chris was appointed Head Coach/GM of the Nelson Leafs in the KIJHL. This past season, Chris served as an Associate Coach/Assistant GM with the 6-time BCHL & 6-time National Champion, Vernon Vipers.

Prior to coaching, Chris spent 4 years in the BCHL with the Victoria Salsa and Burnaby Bulldogs, receiving a NCAA Division 1 scholarship to the University of Niagara Purple Eagles. With his collegiate career completed, Chris went on to play 6 seasons of professional hockey in the ECHL, CHL and UHL. Coach Shaw’s plans are now centered on being a long time coach in Southern California focusing on player development.

Tom Meyer, president and owner of the Ontario Avalanche stated, “I believe Chris is the perfect balance of experience and youth. He has a lot to prove here and will be outstanding at his job. His passion and knowledge for the game is second to none and I look forward to a long relationship with him.”
