RED WINGS ADVANCE TO CANALTA CUP FINALS

Wednesday, March 28, 2012

Three players who missed game six due to injury came back to be key contributors in game seven as the Weyburn Red Wings blanked the Melville Millionaires 2-0 to win the Sherwood final 4-games-to-3.

Jack Kennelly set up Miguel Pereira for the game's first goal on a Wing powerplay at 13:07 of the first period. Both of those players sat out Saturday's 5-1 Melville victory in game six.

Weyburn made it 2-0 on a 5-on-3 powerplay midway through the second when Ryan Whitell fired one over the shoulder of Blake Voth from the right wing face off circle.

Goalie Mitch Kilgore, who missed games five and six, made 22-stops to record his second shutout of the series.

In the end, the Mils' inability to stay out of the penalty box caught up to them; while they were also unable to break Weyburn's impressive penalty kill as the Wings killed off 30 of 32 Melville powerplays from game two onward.

The Canalta Cup final schedule will be released, possibly as early as Wednesday. It's expected Humboldt will host game one on Friday and there is a chance they'd also host game two on Saturday. Details will be posted once they are official.
